Should I ditch the 7950s for a single GPU?

I have CF(7950 + 280) 1100MHz OC(7970 level of performance not the GHz version) for quite some time now, and I am happy with it, really good scaling, zero microstuttering, and no issues, however some games don't have CF profile doesn't support CF or SLI, so ruing at 2560x1440 with a single GPU is a big problem.

So I am thinking to buy a single GTX970 with an custom cooler, OC to 1500MHz in order to slightly surpass the GTX980. From what I have see a GTX980 is around 10% slower than my GPU setup, and in the games that don't support multi GPUs the performance boost that I will gain will be massive, + 0.5GB more vram is a welcome addition:).
    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_980/26.html look 980 vs 7990 (7990 = 7970 CF)

The cost is not even worth mentioning, because I will sell my old GPU's, so over all I will end up paying around 40 euros.

What do you think guys should I do?

Do it. More VRAM as a bonus. No CF/SLI profile issues. Or save up for the 980 Ti for even more of a performance boost.

Yes do it, by switching to a single GPU is less problematic with some games that don't like Multi-GPU as you say, better thermals, lower power consumition and noise. And the most important thing in my opinion is the drivers, the NVIDIA drivers have a better CPU scheduler so can push more draw calls

I'm about to do the same right now. With frostbite games cfx works like charm... But the last amd drivers gave up with me. Gameworks games takes ages to have a proper cfx drivers... And I don't want to wait even months to squeeze my multi gpu setup for great games like Witcher 3...
    Do it for sure...
It's so sad because 2X7950 oc'd are still a beast with proper scale... But Amd is not interested on that.... They want more and more money, buying new cards every year.

    Good luck!

I did just that the day 970 released. I drove to my local Novatech store and picked up a 970 on that day. I had 7950 CFX, running at 1150/1400. Performance was great in BF4 and many other games.

The 970 will perform slightly worse in Frostbyte games, but you won't be far off 7950 CFX even in those games that scaled really well, trust me. Then there's the other games, that will just run better on the 970. A fair bit better. Also, you'll LOVE the silence and low temps.

I run my 970 at 1500/7800 24/7. I also game at 1440p. So our situation is pretty similar.

ok I think you convince me enough, I hope that the 970 will not disappoint me, I am looking at the Gigabyte gtx 970 windforce 3x OC looks ok for the money.

of course I will wait a week to see what will happen with the new Fury before I make my move.

Wait a week for the Fury benchmarks. They will probably bring some pricedrops and good deals for both camps.

Then proceed with getting the best single GPU you can get with your budget. Don't care if it is NVIDIA or AMD, it is going to be fine whatever it is.

    GTX 970 OC'd isn't faster than a 980 OC'd and unfortunately most benchmarks show 970 OC'd vs 980 stock (or near stock).

I have a 980 OC'd and I get about 45-55FPS avg on witcher 3 at 1440p. This is with min post processing, foliage and shadows set to high and hairworks 4x. In other games such as Metro Redux I'm typically over 70 FPS but I do get drops to under 60. I guess it really depends on what games you are playing but I really wouldn't want a weaker gpu such as the 970 and a large part of me even wants a more powerful GPU such as a 980 ti.

If you can afford it, I'd get a 980 instead, even used off eBay.
If you can afford to wait a little longer then the Nvidia Pascal GPUs of next year should blow you away. They'll have around twice the performance of today's maxwell GPUs.

Nobody is saying that 970 can match 980. It's pretty close though and the price premium for the 980 is just not worth it. 980 is atm pretty bad value compared to the 970 and 980ti. It costs a fair bit more than the 970 and performs only slightly better, then there is the 980ti, which again costs a fair bit more than the 980 but performs considerably better.

I'd say if anyone is looking to buy an nvidia card, either go with the 970 or 980ti if you want your money's worth.

If it is end up costing around 450 euros and perform 15-20% faster than 980 then yes.

They will probably present it as a replacement/alternative of the 390 or the 390x I guess, and that's why they will wait until Autumn, to make sure that they have no Hawaii chips left in stock.

I think I will buy the MSI 390 and OC it, this should give me the same performance with my CF 7950 OC(to the 7970 level).

I can't help but wait to see how DX12 games perform with my current hardware before upgrading. It's going to be difficult!
