Confusing here, why is a gtx 780 ti faster then a gtx 980 on this review ?

What the title says, on most things that cards beats the gtx 980 why is that ?
I am very confused now and want to know whats going on, let me know guys what u all think about this, because i dont get it.

It could be alot of reasons why.

From the specs of the cards to the driver version they used.

Whether or not the 780ti is OCed further than what the manufacturer did.

But that is just my theory.

 

Only the 780TI Ghz edition beats it, and even then only by 2-5 fps.

 

Well on some games its like more then 20 frames per sec weird tho.

well, that sums it up for the OP then. No miracles here.

 

When overclocked, GTX 780 Ti and GTX 980 have very similar performance, but GTX 980 can be overclocked further, which means that on average, maximum overclocked GTX 980 will beat maximum overclocked GTX 780 Ti by only a couple of few fps. GTX 780 Ti have abysmally low stock/default clocks and I bet nVidia was fully aware that their cards could handle much higher stock clocks, but for some reason decided to keep them low anyway. With GTX 980, nVidia decided NOT to clock them low enough to perform as slow/fast as GTX 780 Ti because that would give it no edge in reviews aside from an additional 1GB of VRAM.

GTX 780 Ti @ 1300Mhz = GTX 980 @ 1450Mhz. I think most GTX 780 Ti can do 1200-1250Mhz, while most GTX 980 can do 1450-1550Mhz, which, like I said earlier, gives GTX 980 only a slight edge over GTX 780 Ti. This is why there is no point for GTX 780 Ti users to upgrade to GTX 980 as both cards perform about the same when well-overclocked.

 

of course there's no need to upgrade from 780ti to 980. clock for clock, the 780ti is faster. out the box performance, the 980 is slightly faster. overclock both, it pulls a tiny bit further away. it's been documented countless times.

 

If one offered you to trade a GTX980 for your 780Ti, would you take it? Just curious.

lolzies. the only way I'd upgrade from 780ti to 980 would be if it was either free or cost me no more than £50. a tad bit more performance and less noise/heat would be worth that.

 

No, not at all. When you compare STOCK GTX 780 Ti and STOCK GTX 980, then GTX 980 comes out a clear winner with a great edge to it, not some tiny improvement. However, when you overclock them both to their average maximum clocks (~1200-1250Mhz for GTX 780 Ti and ~1450-1500Mhz for GTX 980), GTX 980 comes out only marginally better. So, just as example, when both cards are @ their nVidia stock clocks, GTX 980 can be 20% faster than GTX 780 Ti, but when you overclock both to their average maximum OC, GTX 980 can be only 5% faster than GTX 780 Ti in the same benchmark.

It has nothing to do with GTX 780 Ti being faster clock-for-clock because in the end we have to look at how far you can push your GTX 780 Ti and GTX 980 on average, and in such comparison, GTX 980 is faster than GTX 780 Ti, on average, but by a much smaller % difference than the % difference of stock GTX 780 Ti vs. stock GTX 980 benchmark result comparison.

Because not all videocards are made equal, there can be GTX 780 Ti cards that overclock extremely well, like to about 1300-1320Mhz and then there can be GTX 980 cards that don't overclock well at all, doing only as much as 1400Mhz max. In SUCH a case, GTX 780 Ti @ 1320Mhz vs. GTX 980 @ 1400Mhz, GTX 780 Ti is going to hold an edge.

So which one would I pick? On average, GTX 980 of course! But if I knew that the GTX 780 Ti I could get can clock to 1320-1350Mhz on air with no issues, then I would take my chances with it...

Yes because my GTX 780 Ti is only an average clocker, not a great one, so there is a higher chance GTX 980 would be faster than my GTX 780 Ti when both are overclocked

Besides the raw performance, 1GB of extra VRAM is sure as hell ain't a worthless thing to have, considering poor PC ports that require more VRAM each time, so even if GTX 980 is slightly slower due to especially low OC, then I would probably take it anyway!

I would NOT, however, trade my GTX 780 Ti for a GTX 970 that overclocks really well because GTX 780 Ti will remain a faster card when overclocked.

 

The link is blocked for a reason. Stock vs stock the 980 is about 10-15% faster than a 780ti. Many respectable reviews show this. The ti has been defeated albeit not by much. At 4k the 780ti seems to hold a slight edge prob due to the 256bit bus on the 980.

 

Hopefully when nvidia release a gtx 980 ti with the 256bit, would be nice tho, combined with 8 gb vram, and similar clockspeeds as the gtx 980.
