Onboards can be a PITA. Again, best advice is to get a soundcard.

I will consider that for my next system build - I must admid I installed the last soundcard (PCI) on my Athlon XP 1 Ghz - there was no onboard soundchip in this time. Thince my next system had an onboard sound chip I didn't had any sound problems till today and never looked back (I also have no soundsystem - just 2 100W desktop boxes beside my monitor). So a soundcard will compute all the sound related stuff without the use of my CPU ?

If you grab a hardware based card from Creative Labs or Auzentech.
However, these days people buy cards for better sound, not so much for the CPU loading.
