Microsoft today introduced DirectX 12 at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. DX12 is Microsoft's latest version of the graphics API that is the dominant standard in the grow...

    He-he-he, goodbye Mantle!

BTW, if anyone thinks Microsoft "just decided" to jump on Mantle with DX12 - think again - such changes are decided months (or even years before).
It is more likely AMD decided to create Mantle when they knew from Microsoft about their low-lovel API plans (and not being restricted by current OS developments - brought Mantle earlier than MS can do with DX12).

Of course it can be the opposite... but nevertheless these two techs were born together.

I thought Mantle was meant to be AMD's replacement for DX, why are they interested in DX12.

It is not correct assumption. They want (and use) it as an alternative for CPU-limited scenarios.
Additionally no company in a sane state of mind will abandon the tech used by absolute majority of hardware, software and developers (numbers are inaccurate, but comparable - imagine that Mantle has about ~3 big developers with 1 and a half game released - DX has 1000+ big and small developers with thousands of games...)
It will be similar if AMD says - we will not use\develop x86 processors any more. Let's stick to some x87.

And the last - no current gen consoles (PS4, XBOX ONE) can or will use Mantle...

It was stated at the conference that Microsoft are planning for the first games using DX12 to ship for the 2015 holiday season so it's a bit early to be waving goodbye to mantle just yet, it's got nearly 2 years left, it's quite possible it will become pointless by then though, nobody will bother porting to mantle when it should be much easier to port D3D12 code from Xbone.

thank god these companies are coming to their senses about hardware and software restrictions on newer technology.
the way things are going someone with ivy-bridge mobo and a fermi gpu can easily enjoy broadwell cpus and DX12 which is a big win for end users that don't plan on upgrading their whole computer every generation.
just hoping DX12 won't need a new OS...

Mantle was just so developers had lower access to GPU hardware, never in million years could AMD use mantle to replace DX. Why? well Mantle only gave lower level access, it didn't do all the high level access what DX deals with. They aren't going to rewrite games from ground up, which would have been required, not simple few month of adding additional coding to games like it is now with Mantle.

Hence why AMD welcome DX12, cause basically means they can put Mantle to rest. Saves them paying developers to add additional code to games etc

Just thank AMD for giving MS a push in right direction

So are we saying that only new games will benefit from this? Shame if that is the case.

As per usual, Microsoft is always able to come up with improvements when there's competition.

There's always been competition - OpenGL with extensions.

I've seen a presentation regarding changes to OpenGL. If it's the same with DX, the performance boost for older titles will be minimal if none.

    However:
The important thing is that both NV and AMD declared that their DX11 hardware is DX12 ready. The new Xbox games will use DX12, and using it for PC will be pretty easy. It will take time before drivers mature, and devs will learn how to use it, but the future looks great.

The game will look way better, the devs will be able to add dynamically generated textures and geometry, and it may even lead to completely new approaches to games or even new genres.

They could update the existing DX9, DX10 and DX11 code I suppose but for compatibility reasons (And other reasons.) instead it's a new DirectX version, although it seems it won't add too many new features (But it'll make development easier and the reduced overhead and improved CPU usage is great.) if it'll be compatible with the XBO hardware via a later update.
(Or maybe it'll be divided into these feature levels again so they could add a shader model 5.1 for example or other stuff that needs full hardware support, yeah that's probably how it'll be.)

Obviously, it depends on how long it takes for DirectX 12 games actually to arrive (the quote 'late 2015' is 18 months away!) but it does sound like AMD's Mantle is going to be redundant within a couple of years with perhaps a few developers supporting it alongside DX12 like 3dfx's Glide API. I guess that is good news for NVIDIA graphics card owners though.

Microsoft been under so much fire recently, i think it might come to windows 7 unless lot people will use 8 by 2015.

I don't like AMD much though i had lot of xp with them, but u must thank AMD for pointing a huge finger on MS and developing mantle, without it probably we would never see DX12 or we see a stupid version of it.

It takes a lot of time and effort to develop such platform. I wouldn't be surprised if MS started it long before Mantle.

they probably did, and AMD mantle kept them pushing it further, competitions is a bless.

As expected :) It will be here in 18 months, lets drop Mantle since you can wait for another 1,5 years for improvement to take potentially effect instead of having it now.
That's funny way of thinking guys.

Other thing is: Mantle is in development for 2 years and is here with AMD's very limited resources.
DX12 is in development for 4 years? With M$ resources and will be released in another 18 months, so 5,5 years of development?

    No one questions such things?

AMD only have to worry about their hardware working, not everyone else's

Correct me if im wrong but dont they rewrite whole directx not only direct3D which is equivalent to mantle ? Mantle is just graphics it still needs directx to run other things.
