Personally I find V-sync is horrible for games. I much prefer high FPS on my 120hz monitor. V-sync also adds a slight mouse lag.

    That's not correct. ;)
Tearing always occurs without Vsync, no matter what the fps are.
For movies you need Vsync too to avoid tearing.
That's why there are full screen exclusive modes etc.
Thanks to Windows Aero windowed applications usually always have Vsync enabled.

^ Really? I've never noticed tearing in movies because of their cap rate.

Games on the other hand... I couldn't live without it.

It's not because of the cap rate. :)
I find tearing with slower fps even more annoying than with >100.
It's because the signal is vsynced, either by Aero or by the video renderer itself.

I use it because tearing is absolutely unacceptable.

Yea just like those who keep saying using FPS limiter built into MSI AFB to limit your fps at your refresh rate stopped tearing. Well that was bs because I tried that for a couple of days. It was tearing all over the place.

So i even doubt using the nvidia fps limiter will do the same thing.Sure I could put my backup 9800GT in to find out, but i figure it be a waste of time.

Glad to see that more ppl than me are V-sync addicts. Would have to stop playing if it disappeared.

When I'm setting up a new game one of the first things I do is make sure v-sync is disabled. I have never played an FPS game where v-sync did not create some sort of mouse lag. Doesn't vsync cap at 60fps? Personally I notice a huge difference in smoothness from 60 to 120fps. A 120hz monitor + vsync off is a must if you are a competitive gamer.

vsync caps at the refresh rate you are using.

This is the interesting part. You're used to tearing (not sure if you notice it or not) but extremely sensitive to the mouse lag.
I on the other hand is used to the slight lag (personally I feel that it's barely there) but cannot cope at all with the tearing.

I guess it's all about what we're used to? Maybe people who started playing consoles (with all have V-sync enabled I suppose) first and then PC games need Vsync more than those that started playing PC games when Vsync was disabled (which it mostly was by default back then).

The first thing I do when setting up a new game is make sure VSYNC is ON! Screen tearing is a game killer for me.

No because my monitors are CRT, anyway I never notice tearing.

    Nice thread necro...

FPS Limiter don`t remove tearing, but if you use vsync you got mouse lag, so to remove mouse lag people use FPS Limiter & vsync. That`s the main point.

    That's a whole lotta bull :)

Both Vsync and FPS limiter are waiting before sending frame to be displayed.

You won't magically alleviate drawing lag by using Vsync + 58fps limit.

    dunno really...maybe with Vsync OFF

But hey, don't trust me. Use 58fps limit + Vsync in Skyrim/Team Fortress/L4D2/Dead Space or any other game that you can notice lag with Vsync ON,

and then compare it with 60fps limit + Vsync OFF

Vsync + 58fps limit work like a crap, i compared it with Vsync + 60fps limit and 60 is much smoother.

About mouse lag - test it yourself first and only then write bull. Like example you can test it with skirim, its perfectly shows "lag" and "no lag".

PS. i use MSI AB limiter + d3d overrider.
