Hi guys! Since some months ago I'm having a weird issue with my old HD7850. I don't know how to describe the issue but there's a video from another guy on youtube with the exact same problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_TEW0K8T_A This started when they released Crimson, some weeks after that... It happens frequently when I'm browsing the web and even more frequently when I'm watching a movie. The strange part is that this doesn't happen when I'm playing games. Until now, the flickering was the only problem I had but before yesterday something more strange happened. See the picture below: The PC was working normally because I was able to hear my friends on teamspeak, but the image was flashing and with all that color bars (as seen in the picture above). I turned off and on my monitor to see if it was a monitor problem. The monitor turned on without any problem, showing the ASUS logo and then, when the DVI signal was shown, the problem was still there. So.. The problem isn't in the monitor. After that I restarted my PC and a driver notification appeared saying that Wattman configurations was set to default because of a crash. The strange thing is that more than 2 days already passed with intensive usage (playing games like BF1) and I didn't had any other crash. Does someone have an idea what can I do to solve all this problems? The first one (flickering) is somewhat common if you search on reddit and other places and there is no solution Some things I did trying to solve the flickering: -> Tested many crimson versions -> Tested my RAM's with memtest86+ -> Cleaned all my PC components and changed the 6 pin power supply cable that the GPU is using -> Reinstalled windows (for other reasons) I also tested the GPU with some stress tests like heaven and Kombustor and had no problems. Specs: Sapphire HD 7850 i5-3450 3.50 GHz ASUS P8B75-M LX KINGSTON HYPERX 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ XFX PRO SERIES 650W Core Edition Thanks!! I hope someone can help me!
Problem IS it looks like your card is FAILING. Pure coincidence you updated the driver not long ago. I went thru a related issue with my 7970....and i swear to god it took my a while to figure out it was failing cause i just new it was a driver issue, But it Wasn't. Cause it got worse to the point i couldn't even use it at all with a driver installed. On mine i fairly sure the vram was failing. (was never overclocked either) It just happens....Is it still covered under warranty? If not it MIGHT be fixable by doing the oven trick and re flowing the solder on the card. PrMinisterGR has had to fix his card using the oven as well (7970) but i have fixed older nvidia card the same way as well. LOL mine was fine is games to, For a while lol. It will get worse to the point, its unusable unless it gets replaced OR the solder re flow (bake method) fixes the issue. http://lifehacker.com/5823227/save-dying-video-cards-with-a-quick-bake-in-the-oven
The strange thing is that the flickering is doing since some months ago but only when using 2D. With 3D applications like games I never had flickering. Also, this last problem that happened this week didn't happened again. I played many many hours of BF1 and other games. Stressed the card with FurMark (Kombustor), OCCT (0 errors found), Heaven, and didn't had any problem or artifacts. After all this, do you still think it's the card dying? Warranty isn't an option, the card is too old (4 years now).
Can you get a copy of your GPU bios using GPU-Z, and post it for me here? If you have a Linux installation, does the card behave the same there?
lol whats going on in your picture is IMPOSSIBLE for a just a driver bug lol. IT will happen more and more frequently and you will notice it even more after driver updates. Yes its a Hardware issue. Mine was only having issues outside of games as well until it couldn't play games any more that its! PrMinisterGR what kind of screens were you getting on yours before the Bake fix?
NO! his hardware is fine. god damn it. why do people always point to faulty hardware by default. this is the typical hardware acceleration display corruption bug when you watch flash movies. 3d works fine. desktop works fine. just when certain flash/video content is displayed with hardware acceleration the screen corrupts like this. just disable "hardware acceleration" in every browser you use. you can even reproduce/ force test this error by opening a flash movie in a browser and then going fullscreen. in 90% of the time you will get this problem.
Here you have it! But I need to told you that my PC freezed when trying to get the vBIOS. Only solution was a restart! I don't know why, but this only happens with GPU-Z since the first day. Sometimes opening GPU-Z freezes my PC, never happened with other software. vBIOS: https://cld.pt/dl/download/1adf40fb-abdb-41a9-8eb8-74e9c1a6f3e7/Pitcairn.rom Here's a video: https://cld.pt/dl/download/86c1558f-7347-41f8-a72b-5e4675f0274b/freeze.mp4 No. Btw, how can I do that? I know how to increase the maximum voltage/clocks using MSI Afterburner, but that's the maximum. How can I increase the minimum (idle)? If I remember correctly I tried that (disabling HW acceleration) without success some months ago. But yeah, it only happens when I'm using facebook, youtube, or viewing videos using VLC media player. Thank you all for the help!!
What I did with your bios was to raise the 3D voltage from 1.210V to 1.225V, and the boost voltage from 1.210V to 1.225V. In accordance to that I made your fan profile a bit more aggressive, so that the card can cope with the increased temperatures better and I also increased the power limit from 105W to 140W so that you don't get any downclocks. I couldn't find a newer bios for your GPU that matches your part number exactly. I settled for the closest one, that means it might not work, or it might damage your card. Your card's part number is 113-221PROHE-XW1 and your bios version is 015.022, and the bios I'm sending you is for part number 113-221PROHE-X03 with bios version 015.029. A newer vBIOS is very likely to solve your problems, and before trying with this one you might try contacting Sapphire support for the case that they might provide you with a new one. I know it is probably redundant, but I have to say this now. If by following this procedure something goes wrong, or you have hardware damage, it is not my fault. Knowing that, please continue. NOTICE: Before you flash your video card bios, make sure that your card has a bios switch, so that if the flashing procedure goes bad, you can use the other bios on your card to repair the primary bios. DO NOT proceed if your card doesn't have a switch. The switch should look like this (the actual position of the switch might be different than in the picture, we only care that the switch EXISTS): Now that we have this out of the way, we can continue. 1) Download ATIFlash and extract it into a folder. Download the modified bios. 2) Extract the Test_01.rom file from the Test_01.zip archive, into the folder where ATIFlash is, so that the atiwinflash.exe is in the same folder as the Test_01.rom. Make sure that the Pitcairn.rom you sent me is also in that folder. 3) Open a Atiwinflash.exe as Administrator. You can do that by right clicking on the file and pressing "Open as Administrator". 4) Select your GPU correctly from the top right and only then, load image, select Test_01.rom and press "Program". 5) Restart and do a clean driver install using DDU. IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG: 1) Turn off your system. 2) Put the bios switch on the card on the other position. 3) Open a Atiwinflash.exe as Administrator. You can do that by right clicking on the file and pressing "Open as Administrator". 4) Put the bios switch on the original position. 5) Select your GPU correctly from the top right and only then, load image, select Test_01.rom and press "Program". 6) Restart and you are back to your original bios like nothing happened. Good luck!
Hi, Thank you very much for your help!!! The strange thing is if it's the vBIOS (the flickering) why it only started now after so many time of use (I have the card for nearly 4 years). Also, I have a new vBIOS supposedly for my card (I'm not 100% sure) provided by Sapphire last year after I opened a support ticket for a problem I had but then I discovered the problem was caused by a beta driver and because of that I didn't flashed it. Take a look at the vBIOS they provided me if you can: https://cld.pt/dl/download/68042997-80a1-4c43-bd7b-93ce5f1b1870/221p0400_635665211962008471.zip BTW, about the system freeze with GPU-Z, do you think it's 100% a GPU problem (maybe vBIOS), or can it be something with the motherboard? (My motherboard BIOS was updated to the latest version in 2014). I'm asking this questions because I'm thinking on upgrade the GPU on a future and I want to make sure that all the problems are caused by the GPU and not by other system component like the motherboard. Thank you very much one more time!!!
The bios that Sapphire sent you is for the 2GB card. The one you have is a 1GB card, right? The revision of the bios is much later than the one you have. You have 015.022 and they gave you 015.036. If they did give you that bios, I would flash it. I used to have 2D flickering with my card and it was the bios update that solved it. Does your card have a bios switch? If yes, you have nothing to lose by checking. Also GPU-Z might trigger a bug in your bios or the sensors on the card. All of the things you say indicate a problem (either software/firmware, or hardware) around the GPU.
They sent me that one yes, but maybe they didn't noticed that I have the 1GB version? Like I said they send me that vBIOS one year ago supposedly to my graphics card (They asked me to send my vBIOS first, using GPU-Z). Yes, I was looking for the BIOS switch and I have it. That it's minimally safe? I ask this because some years ago I got a dual bios gigabyte motherboard and because of a corrupt BIOS the board got damaged and replaced by gigabyte. Yeah, the dual bios didn't helped. But did you have the 2D flickering since the first day or only started after some months/years? Thanks!!
Hmm maby that revision is 2GB afterall If so we need to check how many GDDRs he have there to be sure, we need photos. And if so then he will get Free upgrade to 2GB ver. of his GPU ! I know that Sapphire/XFX etc. doin' this for some time now.
I can take some photos, but what you want to see is under the cooler no? There is 8 memory chips if I'm seeing the right thing!! I will upload a video. Video here: https://cld.pt/dl/download/c7d19a65-ca22-4766-876d-401a585df801/memory.mp4 I think it's that small chips no? (256MB each?) You can see the first 4, and at the end you can see more 2 (the other 2 aren't visible in the video, sorry for that...).
Since you do have a switch, and a newer bios from Sapphire, you have nothing to lose. In my "flash" post I describe how you can recover from a bad flash. Worst case scenario, film the flashing procedure using the vBios that Sapphire provided you. If it goes to hell and you can't recover the card (which I cannot see how, with the switch, but nothing is 100% sure), then raise a ****storm that their bios damaged your card (for which you would be right), and make them do something.
So you said gpu-z locks up (freezes) your pc? Still sounds like bad hardware to me.....I would try the bios PrMinisterGR made for you.......dam sure nothing to loose lol (especially a card with bios switch)
What do you mean its typical....Its dam sure NOT supposed to be! lol I agree it should be disabled for the most part, but when needed it shouldn't be a problem. I know AMD is known for flicker issues and what not. but i have not seen that kind of screen for many people cards.(working that is lol) If the problem goes completey away with acceleration disabled i will be a bit surprised.....but that be great for the op
