Default IRC's & Chatrooms & Avatars - 07-07-2003, 12:42 | posts: 29,522 | Location: Guru3D testlab

Recently we have a lot of questions regarding IRC/Chatrooms. Let me make a clear statement on it. There will be none !

IRC's need to be monitored 24/7, sure there are nice BOTS. But fact is that this staff sees way more stuff that you guys will never see or notice.

Hatriate, flames, racism .. all these things we try to protect you guys from. Furthermore, IRC are know for their reputation of illegal files and most of all script kiddies who will hack the actual unknown visitors.

There are about 20+ people moderating these forums and we hardly have enough time keeping up with that.

example: I'm pretty sure you guys have noticed that we had to shutdown the comment system on the frontpage for many months. You guys want to know why ? Because automated scripts where spamming the sections with stuff like we are NAZI's and such.

The comment section is much like a live chatroom ... extremely interactive.

An IRC can not be properly moderated 24/7 and is not a safe place to hang out for the normal Guru3D.com readers. Therefor this site will not support IRC's and chatroom in any way or form and I don't care wether that is an official or unofficial one. I don't want to have anything to do with it because in a few weeks from now I'll be the one getting reports from unknown readers that where hacked or abused and discriminated on IRC.

*Edit by Finchwizard*

Avatars are disabled on the forums due to security concerns and VBulletin not willing to discuss as to why this is happening or offering a fix.

Avatars will be offline until further notice so do not open threads asking for ETA's. There currently is none.

Hilbert is that a real motherboard in your PC Specs...? Because I tried searching that motherboard model. But I came up with nothing. The only one I have found was "PX865PE Pro II". So unless that's some type of advanced reference board.
Or is it just a typo...? If it is the PX865PE Pro II .. Its a nice board.

Oh and "BTW" Roger that on the IRC dilemma.

How about implimenting a chatroom similar to that on ebay, that way you can moderate it.
And sorry for the extra poll i was not around here at that time so i didnt knew this issue was already brought up.

pft. There actually is a way that IRC could be used - have your own server!

then stupid crap like channel takeovers an d stuff could easily be thwarted - the rest is simple, curseword bots, flood bots, bannign etc - all could be maintained by reletively few people.

If anyone needs a demonstration, Id be happy to offer one.

Default 04-17-2004, 13:22 | posts: 16,441 | Location: Locked in Guru3D Server Room. Help!

I totally agree that it is a hard place to monitor.

But I am sure there are quite a few people, who would actually be quite willing to help out in anyway way they can. To try and keep things as friendly as possible.

If you are ever needing someone to help out, I am always at your mercy.
Love the site, and would be happy to help out in anyway way I can.

Lets make this the best forum on the net

hi, im an irc network administrator on 420-mafia.net, not all irc chats are bad, we have a great staff we always monitor and i love to gline abusers, should u think of goin to an irc your more then welcome to come on 420-mafia.net its only a suggestion.
should u decide to to go to irc. i would set up a channel secret and private with a password with a few bots to help i would also set the guru staff up with owner admin ops and half ops, and with regular users haveing voice, i would personly make sure the room is secure and well moderated and all guru staff would have all powers with the chanel to kick and ban and should a gline be in order i would do that or have 1 of my staff do it

get back to me

Here sth for the IRC lovers to think of (escpecially the rizon ones)

"In the late of November, nearing the new year, Rizon underwent a massive attack directed at taking down our network that was loved by many users. People believe it was out of pure jealousy, but that is more than expected from running a network that everyone loved. The attack was so catastrophic, it left our network at a standstill for about 4 months."

No matter if u are on the PC 24/7 IRCs are damn vurnarable and not really GREAT. I like this forum and don't need a chatter tool. BTW why do u guys not simply create your own irc channel and go there playing babysitter 24/7 for all the sick idiots out there....
Call it #idiotscare@liketodosenselessstuff.net or whatever....

IRC is a truly dark place, and frankly an outdated one. I remember the joys of Mirc in the 90s...now looking sadly dated and haunted by ne'er do wells. If you want real time conversation...well...erm...have one with people! Forums are more laid back and less prone to general freakery IMHO
