Hey Guru guys. Looking to buy a new laptop, having 2 different in mind, basically the only difference is that the one is with dual 7970m and the other one is dual 770m. The 770m is 150 $ more and the 7970 has a small ssd(32GB). Which dual GPU will give me the best perfomance? Thanks
Really good question to ask in Nvidia section. Anyway, get the 770M. Also, you can look up benchmarks for both and the games u play and than make your decision.
I think the Gtx 770s schould in Theory be faster at Most current games! But thats not to say the dual 7970s are a slouch in any possible way! You cant go wrong with either card if you ask me just try and get the card that has more V-ramm incase you decide to add more displays in the future/ I believe its called ( matrix ) or something along those lines not sure.
the 7970M has been out for quite some time, so I assume it's weaker. But consult the internet to be sure.

Basically difference is here: 7970m 32ROPs - 24ROPs 770m 7970m 256bit bus - 192 bit buss 770m 7970m 100W rating - 75W rating 770m Real life: 3D mark Vantage - 7970m = 21900 | 770m = 19200 Fire Strike - 7970m = 4690 | 770m = 3350 BF4 Ultra - 7970m = 35fps | 770m = 27fps Dota2 Ultra - 7970m = 80fps | 770m = 68fps MetroLL High - 7970m = 51fps | 770m = 43fps Dead SPace 3 Ultra - Both 93fps TR Ultra - 7970m = 46fps | 770m = 42fps Alan Wake Ultra - 7970m = 44fps | 770m = 35fps Check what kind of cooling that notebook has and if it's decent, get 7970m. It's same situation as years ago when I got 5870m which was desktop HD5770. (But that was 50W TDP and with proper cooling and modded bios I got to desktop stock clocks like nothing.) Edit: just fyi 7970m is on market one more year than 770m. it got rebranded to 8970m and got 50MHz boost with it, and it still does so well, that AMD did not care and rebranded it again as M290x (no changes here).
A friend of mine has a laptop with a Crossfire HD 7970m and it is great for gaming one of the best I have seen in a laptop.
Is that 7970m paired with an Intel or AMD CPU? I'm only asking because most 7970m that I've seen are paired with an AMD A10 which is crippling compared to the i7's that a 770m is typically paired with.
And even so scores I posted are average scores taken from multiple laptops from multiple vendors where paired with a10-5750 or lower. There is other side too: intel still has that aggressive Turbo, where only single threaded workload got for max multiplier and most of games for last 3 years are capable to use 1 core fully and load 2nd about 40-80%, effectively putting High end CPU like i7-3610QM (2.2~3.3GHz) to 3GHz at best while gaming. While paired with A10-5750M (2.5~3.5GHz) you can at same scenario reach 3.2GHz which is just 10~15% below mentioned i7. And both would not bottleneck desktop HD7870 much (except few rare games). And yes, intel has total compute power higher, but I would not go again for i7 in notebook and rather would take i5 as it clocks higher and is better for gaming. Top i5-4340M costs 30% less than i7 mentioned (which is not top), has clock 2.9~3.6, providing in all scenarios up to 4 thread better performance. Eats only 37W compared to 45W of that i7. (A10-5750M is 35W and I think AMD should have gone for higher clocks here as it could have outperformed those i7 in same way as i5 does) To sum it up: 7970m is stronger than 770m. Best choice of CPU for performance is top of class i5, 2nd is i7 and 3rd still potent a10-5750/5757 (Soon we'll see kaveri) Best choice of GPU is 7970m both performance and costs. (but there are currently only 3 intel based notebook with 7970m paired with i7 3820QM/3610QM and those notebooks go from 2500$ up) If cost matters then around 1000-1100$ notebook houses 10-5750+7970m, while intel+770m solutions go form around 1500-1600$ paired with low end i5-4200M which in is bit weaker than 10-5750 in total and games. And I would dare to say both CPUs in gaming are still very good. From my experience go for 10-5750+7970m as every 10% performance bonus to that will cost you like 40~50% more. (or wait 3 months for kaveri mobile CPUs)
Not sure where you're shopping, but here in Canada, the 770M + i7-4700MQ laptops sit around $1300-1400. The A10-5750 +7970M sit about $1250. i5 laptops are typically paired with GTX 760m, and they run ~$1000. Also consider that mobile i5's are dual core with hyperthreading, while i7 MQ's are quad cores with hyperthreading. Edit: Benchmarks of the MSI GX60 with a A10 + 7970M. Nearly nice review showing how CPU does with following memory config: Memory 1x8GB A-Data DDR3-1600 Next time they may give it Dual channel 1866MHz for change. Funny, I even seen benchmark of "new" 8970m+a10-5750 with nearly 2 years old drivers. Or benchmarks which were set up in way that they prove how much weaker a10-5750 is against i7 mobile. (like 1366x768, low details benchmarks, where GPU is out of way and is about CPU. Then difference is much smaller at 1920x1080 high)
Go with the dual 7970m with ssd. If you were to go nvidia I would go with the 780m thats an underclocked 770 but probably very expensive. 770m appears to be an underclocked 660
The A10 is weaker in all areas compared to a mobile i7 you can't argue to the contrary. And as OP is looking at laptops with dual cards I would assume both laptops have i7's in them as no OEM would pair an APU from AMD with dual cards.
I dont think anybody in their right mind would pair a low end amd apu with higher end multi gpu mobile setup. if oem are doing that shame on them
In case of dual GPU solution he'll likely have no possibility to pair it with AMD anyway. But I wanted to point that while AMD's A10-5750 is weaker than modern i7s. It's still viable and that some reviews are not entirely fair by testing with single channel memory configuration, slow memories or even very old drivers. Edit: And we all know how that impacts performance of AMD systems on desktops where there are proper full scale tests available.
Hmm I would go with the nvidia 770M because I think you will get less problems with the drivers. For instance, alot of dual mobile card users have problems with drives installing and also problems in getting to the 7970M. The 7970M is a great card though don't get me wrong, but this is just a kind of a example you should take notice of.
