I just tried to update my drivers to the latest but it didn't work. Using DDU did not help. I couldn't even install my old version again (after running DDU in safe mode again). I had to use system restore to get 358.91 working again.

Looks like I was lucky the last time I tried to update (to something like 364.## weeks ago) because I had system restore disabled, but then I was able to install 358.91 at least. Some other intermediate driver also was able to be installed but without the control panel working.

Some logs from after running DDU in safe mode, trying to install 365.10, restarting, trying to install again with logging enabled with a shortcut command:

  2. This is the first error that displays in the install log so, it looks like you need to get Windows Updates (update Windows 7 to version 6.3 at least). Hold the Windows key + r to bring up Run command box then type "winver" without quotes. If it shows less than 6.3, then you need to update windows via Windows Update to at least version 6.3.

Edit: Oops didn't check that the version number referred to Windows 8.1. I guess it's a bug with installer for 365.10 setting the minimum os version check to high.

Thank you but 6.3 is Windows 8.1 as far as I know. There is no update for W7 to make it 6.3. And I'm not using the wrong installer. The file I used is: 365.10-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe with CRC32 DC378465.

There are other posts on other forums with the same problem, maybe a bug in the driver installer

Try extracting them and installing manually from device manager

I tried last time installing from device manager and it didn't work.
Also I'm afraid system restore might not work next time, so don't want to try anything else until the situation becomes a bit more clear.

Sounds like your windows install is at fault if device manager install didn't work either

To be honest I don't remember if it failed, or just the control panel didn't work after installing from device manager. If my Windows install has become "incompatible" with installing Nvidia drivers, then I'd like to know how.

Well yea if you install via device manager, you won't get the NVCP unless you install that separately

Device manager only installs the driver, the NVIDIA installer installs all the other stuff

Windows is software, software can corrupt, and often does

Run an sfc /scannow from elevated CMD

Already ran sfc /scannow which didn't find any problems. Sorry, I should've said it earlier.

Send the DDU logs to Wagnard the DDU Dev, see if he can decipher anything from them

What is the error number and message when yu try to insall directly via Device Manager.
You can also send me the DDU los at wagnard28@gmail.com

I also have a beta version of DDU that could help you if you are interested.

Thanks for your interest Wagnard. I've not tried to install 365.10 through device manager, but I'm not interested in having updated drivers without the Nvidia control panel.
I'll email you the logs with a link to this thread, but I don't really want to try beta software if there's even a remote possibility it could bring my windows install to a worse state.

I'm patient and don't play the latest AAA games too often, so Im trying to handle the situation with the least amount of risk possible.

You're being given advice right left and centre and refusing all of it, hoping your machine will miraculously fix itself without having to do anything

People aren't giving you advice that will worsen the state of the machine, grow a pair and give it a go!

What's the worst thing that could happen? You have to reinstall Windows...

I'm not refusing, I'll just wait for it to come out of beta. :)

I really don't want to ditch this Windows install. Especially without finding out what the failure is. If we do, we might help others too.

You know WHQL drivers are just betas with a certificate right?

I'm not saying ditch that Windows install, I'm saying that's the worst case scenario, running DDU beta, and installing from device manager isn't going to kill Windows

The thing with the DDU beta is that Wagnard in his thread suggests that only "users that have backups and are not afraid of system reinstalls" should try the beta. It sounds pretty risky to me, so after my last try I'm just planning to wait for a bit to see if Nvidia get their ship together unless something looks actually likely to fix my problem.

I am really thankful you want to help but please don't blame me for being cautious. Soon there will be another driver because of Doom, maybe I'll try again with more chances than with the same exact installer.

I'm not blaming you for being cautious, just wondering what the point of the "Help!" thread was, if you weren't going to try anything suggested

Good luck with the next driver

I was kinda hoping the logs would be enough to easily find out and fix the problem. Sooner or later I will have to make some progress, and I will continue to use this thread for that purpose.

I got a look at the DDU log and everything seems ok.

To help identify the problem, the device manager error + error code would really help identifying and fixing the cause.

Also the DDU Beta, do not use. Its not for general uses.

YOur error in setup.exe.log is quite weird as you have the good operating system but yet it fail.

Try installing the driver with AV/security software disabled or any other stuff / sandbox thing that may disrupt the installer.

You could also try installing the driver in safemode (Note, Geforce Experience will fail to install in safe Mode, so untick it)

I will try device manager and safe mode installs when the next driver is released. Securty stuff was already disabled, and I will completely uninstall them, including Sandboxie just incase, before the next try.
