Have been using rivatuner for two months now and I think it is the friendliest videotuning utility there is.
I have a tnt2 vanta (with the 64bit memory bus)and need all the leverage i can get. I only play UT. I mostly have the w buffer enabled in 16bit, but this will drop framerates when large open spaces are displayed. The drop is still there when w buffer is not enabled anymore.
The funny thing is that this not happen every time.Hmm

A lot of fiddling with all possible settings in UT and rivatuner have brought substantial improvements in look and framerates and therefore
gaming pleasure. In indoor medium poly maps i can get between 40-60 average. This seems to come at the cost of dropping frames in big outdoor scenic levels which have gone down, strange, both higher and lowered framerates. I have noticed that sometimes the drop does not happen don't know why, so its possible to get enough frames but what is limiting this?. Switching to windows or starting Ut for the second time without rebooting does sometimes lower frames too.
I always check for free resources and make sure there are not a lot other stuff in the background.
Perhaps one day it will fix itself
in the meantime has anyone experienced something similar?
cheers
W-buffer does not affect performance
I need more info about your system to answer this question, U've too slow display adapter. Don't forget that UT is VERY CPU dependant.
R u using Detonator 2.xx? It's the best choice for your display adapter.

Thank you for your response unwinder, I seem to have it working fine now, including w-buffer. Although i am not convinced it does not affect performance
And I do use 2.xx(5.22) they work fine and seem very stable.
But why is your UT preset written only for the 6.xx series?
One could think that its better for UT.
Is it? Or is it only better when UT is combined with a geforce chip?
I am tempeted to retry a 6 series driver to find out what all the extra settings are.

Nevertheless i am very comfortable with the way the vanta works with my pentIII 450/100 128mb. The difference in frames between lowres and highres/mediumres is neglibele. I play just as easy with everything on (except dynamic lighting which makes a noticable difference)in 800x600 as in 512x384 with everything on lowest settings.
The vanta is not so bad after all. I always search forums for newbies with a vanta in need for speed. I recommend the things i found out and tell them to use rivatuner.

The number of polgons rendered seems to be the bottleneck along with pure cpu speed. From what I have read i think extra ram might help also(as even 128 mb is still not always enough)
Detonator 2.xx (2.08/2.25/2.17/2.40) and Detonator II (5.22/5.30...) it's not the same

6.xx presets will work fine excepts VSync. 5.xx uses different registry entries for VSync.
