Default how to disable Intel Virtualization Technology on Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 BIOS - 05-24-2012, 12:54 | posts: 2

I bought Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 last year.

I am planning to setup a virtual mac on my workstation.

I would like to know how to disable the Intel Virtualization Technology ( required to be disabled for running virtual Mac) through the mother board Bios.

I am unable to find the option to do so.

maybe i am dead wrong ,but in almost 99% motherboards support VT ,. However, this is only if you have a CPU with virtualization support. If you have a motherboard that supports a CPU with virtualization, than your motherboard likely supports virtualization. The thing is, not all motherboards have a configurable option to toggle on/off virtualization. If your motherboard does not have an option in the BIOS to do this, there's a good chance that virtualization is on by default.
fire it up CPUZ and look at the instructios set.
your mobo has the latest BIOS ?

I looked in the gigabyte manual and traced its position. It can be enabled or disabled. This model is a server motherboard, I was wondering it should have the option.

Thanks

Wait, why do u want to switch it off? Hardware assisted virtualization makes virtual machines usable, prior to AMD-V and Intel VT-x, virtual machines were really really slow.

Note: you can run Hackintoshes with virtualization but since it's considered warez, I will not discuss this further.

Warez,…….?

Maybe if you resort to illegal downloads of modified version of the OS but that isn’t necessary to install OS X. I wont get into all that either but I find it odd that virtualization needs to be turned off in order to run a virtual Mac OS X (or OS X server).

Just by installing MacOS X on a non-branded Apple machine by itself is considered warez since it's illegal as stated in the SLA. If you don't believe me look at what Apple did to Psystar. You can only install MacOS X Server on virtual machines given that you install it on an XServe or other authorized Apple machines).

I read somewhere it's best to disable it if you aren't running VM ware, can't remember why...maybe it steals some ram?...not sure.

I wouldn’t argue the point either way.

I was only questioning the use of the term “warez” since the use of illegal software isn’t necessary for a Hackintosh build or virtual machine install of OS X. In which case it would be a violation of the end users license agreement when using the retail disc (or Lion download from the Apple apps store) which is very different then actively looking for and using illegal “warez”.

I also question the necessity of having to turn off VT- support for such a vm.

Yeah I know I was just saying in general. I agree it seems pretty fishy to me.
