Am I supposed to eject external HDDs before shutting off PCs? Once in a while, Windows runs the "Check Disk" program in DOS mode when I turn on my computers the next time. I work on files stored on external HHD at home and at the program for mentally-handicapped people. My home computers have Windows 10 and the computer at the program has Windows 7. I almost lost a file that I was working on.
There's no actual need to "eject" an external harddrive if you're disconnecting after the PC is shutdown, but it is good practice to do so.
If u mean the "safely eject drive" thing, it's to protect against data loss when write caching is enabled ('better performance" option). But yeah as above there's no need to disconnect the drive when shutting down.
I have used drives for years without doing anything when shutting down, never lost and of my stuff. I`m more concerned about the Seagate brand. I had to buy another Seagate 4tb external as that was the only available option locally. Had to back up stuff before it went completely.
Op if your PC is running chdsk occasionally you should run a scan on your drives with HDTune etc. Might have some bad sectors. @TK - 2TB/4TB Seagate's are OK, it's the 1.5/3 TB drives that should be avoided.
Yeah my 1.5tb rma`s are flaky too. I got 1 2tb internal rma still sealed, they sent me a 2tb external that replaced my 1.5tb external.
Flaky in what way? The 2TB M001's are pretty solid....do u know what drive is inside the case? Maybe they sent u a rebranded Samsung or something?
OP, I'd hit one of the give-away sites and grab a copy of Hard Drive Sentinel.... Either Pro or Standard. They can both be found for free on give-away sites. Hard Disk Sentinel Professional (100% OFF) Hard Disk Sentinel Standard (100% Discount) There's links to each... At least then you'll know what condition the harddrive is in.
Oh right I thought you meant the 2TB was flaky.... Btw there's a fw update available for that 1.5TB drive. http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/207957en
I ran Hard Drive Sentinel and it reported no problems with my HDDs. All of my HHDs are made by Western Digital. I have Samsung 840 Pro in my notebook and 850 Pro in my primary home PC, and OCZ Vertex 2 in my "backup" PC.
