There is this card on sale at the moment. Though it does look tempting, I am worrying if 4GB is going not going to be not enoough soon, I play at 2560x1600 and my 670 already has 4GB some games with very detailed textures reqiure this already like modded skyrim for example. So what do you think, is it better to wait for 6 or 8 GB in Jan/Feb, or take this one?

If you like very high quality textures, taking a double vram model isnt a bad idea :)

    4gb is very little memory
    Ideally is 24GB

I don't think NVidia have any intention of making any 8gb cards in the next few months.

If you really want an 8gb card to play skyrim you could have a look at an 8gb 290X.

Personally, I think that's a cracking deal for a GTX980. I previously owned a 780 Phantom too and it was a great bit of kit. However, I would never buy from Scan. I and others I know have had first hand appalling fights getting stuff returned and accepted in the past with Scan.

I know it is a good price, for the moment at least. That's why I am considering it otherwise I'd wait.

There is some indication that there will be 8GB 980 coming rather sooner than later here and here. Problem is that at first it will most likely be very expensive, and I am thinking maybe at the moment it's better to go with 4GB and then in a year or so swap it for 8GB when the prices cool down a bit.

I bought from Scan before but never had to deal with any RMA or returns, but had some horrific experience with ebuyer few years back though, probably all of the shops have their "bad days".

I appreciate any input I can get so thanks.

Now about the shops, I too expect better but when there is only a handful retailers available with good product price there is not much I or we can do :)

Yeah it is an issue that friends and I often whinge about. However I would say that the circles I mix in have had terrible customer service form Scan and yes eBuyer too. Far worse horror stories than for example Amazon or Overclockers. Its just something that stops me being tempted at times by Scans very competitive pricing. I've no idea of using Gainward directly, so I'm afraid I wouldn't know if they would be any good if Scan were to fail you. Just my thoughts anyway.

    Good luck either way :)

I used to have 2 Gainward cards before and two of my friends have 570 Phantoms currently, none of them ever broke down so this is kind of reassuring. I think I'll have to flip a coin on this one :)

Considering the following quote from your second link, the article is baseless speculation best taken with a truckload of salt:

    Yeah right.

Yeah 384 bit 980. Is it April fools day?
As far as vram size I recommend holding out for the 1tb version.

Wonder if there will ever be a day where GPU vRAM is upgradable via expansion slots

Speculation, it may be but 780 is in 6GB versions so it is possible to see 8GB 980's. If this gainward had 6GB I would not even blink to buy it. I think I will wait on this one, believe it or not but you all guys helped me with the decision.

    The 780 is 384bit.

As a rule of thumb vram is dividable by 3 on 192/384 cards and by 2 on 256/512 cards, due to GDDR5 chip density.
