I honestly believe DirectX 12 won't come to Windows 7 if I think about everything Microsoft have done in the past.

I would really like to be proven wrong.

This guy opened his mouth when he shouldn't have. Now Microsoft is trying to do damage control. I'm willing to bet what he said was true.

Of course it is. We all knew that Microsoft was going to use it to push Windows 10. They're predictable that way. Anyone who was expecting Windows 7 to get DX12 and a support extension are just deluded.

I know, isn't it unfair! Every other company in the world gives away key features for free to old products that they put on new products, hang on, that doesn't sound quite right... ;)

It's not as if Windows 10 is going to cost an arm and a leg, it's quite cheap upgrade. On a new computer you would be getting Windows 10, on computers currently with Windows 8/8.1 it is supposedly a free upgrade. Both new computers and computers sold with 8/8.1 may have hardware to support DirectX 12 features, or have at least the performance to play the games where DirectX 12 will be useful (complex graphics etc).

Computers with Windows 7 probably won't have the power to play DirerctX 12 games anyway. I'm talking about the majority of Windows 7 users here, companies etc, not the odd person with GTX 980's in SLI who's to stubborn to move off Windows 7. It's not as if you can't make Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7 anyway :).

It would be completely ludicrous and idiotic for Microsoft to support DirectX 12 on Windows 7, or even 8.1 to a large extent. Windows 8.1 --> Windows 10 is free, get out of your stubborn ways and update! Windows 7 --> Windows 10, assuming it's say, $30, big deal! If you can't afford $30, you probably won't have the hardware to support DirectX 12 anyway. If you do, then I suggest you change your priorities financially. Further to that, if you can't pay the $30, or even $60, with hardware that supports DirectX 12, I hardly think that you actually pay for the games that make use of it anyway.

How much did you spend on your last phone? How long will you actually use that phone for? Be realistic people!

Fine by me, looking forward to both DX12 and Windows 10 (if that's the definite name of the next Windows).

At least DX12 doesnt require new hardware. I think every DX change in last 15 years required a new GPU for it until now.

You would just have to use the generic Microsoft drivers. Mice and keyboard manufacturers usually use universal drivers, so it would have to be very old or from a lesser manufacturer not to have socialised drivers. If the drivers are that old I would be using them anyway ;).

It's funny listening to people unhappy about features not being added to an OS they own

And the only time I like to compare computer stuff to cars (Normally hate the analogy) is if you buy say the latest BMW, then that company releases a new version with extras that your model doesn't have and you think complaining about it is right, that somehow you deserve those new features for free

If you want new stuff, buy the new OS, simplez

If you want to keep an older OS, expect less goodness

People need to learn to put aside personal preference and accept progress.

Unreasonable and illogical attachment to the old and redundant is never going to do you any favors.

Having been using windows 7 partition lately for sweetfx purposes in dolphin, i find 7 to be more annoying and sometimes down right aggravating/limiting to use after being with 8.1 for awhile now. Funnily enough its the small things that i use to say that upgrading to 8.1 for just wouldnt be worth it and which are not in win7 are what i cant live without in an OS anymore.

Cant wait for 10. Though its a shame such a fine OS like 8.1 is being made redundant so early because of all the whingers and their baseless complaints. What a waste of a perfectly good OS.

It was common sense from the minute they announced Win10 and DX12... that they would be trying to pull support from 7 to force users into moving to the newer OS.

But, the main question is... will DX12 be like DX10 or DX11?
DX10 proved itself to be rather... pointless, and not worth it. Far too many of the games that had "DX10 exclusive features" were proven to be just DX9 features that had been specifically locked off to make DX10 look better.

And with software guys like John Carmack openly stating (multiple times) DX10 is worthless. That there is nothing you can do in it that you can't do in DX9.

DX11 finally brought some good improvements and actual steps forward. So, will DX12 actually add real improvements and be worth the move forward? Or, will it be another DX10 and only be an update in name alone?
Just have to wait and see.

But here is the kicker, DX12 doesn't require Sli GTX 980 setups. The Geforce 400 series and the HD 7000 series and later will be able to use DX12.

Microsoft still hasn't said much about what won't be supported on today's cards, but studios can still use DX12 and be able to target today's graphics cards.

Although it's understandable why Microsoft won't support DX12 on Windows 7, that choice will definitely impact the adoption for DX12. Most studios will stick to DX11.0 because that is what Windows 7, the OS with the biggest userbase, supports.

Yeah, some of my older games don't work. Like POP: sands of time, really wanted to replay that one.
W8 is funky at best. Most just learn to like it or make enough excuses to convince themselves but for the most part it's the UI that everyone focuses on.

I will no doubt upgrade to W10 at some stage in the next 2 years, but at present W7 does everything i need, so i see no need to upset my perfectly working apple cart at present, plus be it a new OS or a game, i always like to wait to see what is what.

But i am sure W10 will become the next W7 over the next 2 years.
