As old as your system is I would just go ahead and upgrade. It would be a huge jump in performance. There's always something better just around the corner.

wait for the new chips as they will run cooler due to better TIM applied on them. You will be glad you waited

yes the i7 4770k launch date q2 2013 intell wouldnt have reached the moon
    by this period .
ill put on a good cooler and forget about the heat issue ,
waiting a year sucks . and the 4970k will be expensive and the first wave
of buyers will be like beta testers like the start of the z87 , it looks more
    stable now

Good i discovered this topic, im also planning on a upgrade seems good deal z97+4790k.
And 14nm also compatible with z97 seems good investment then if its later this year released.

    z97 better for SSD right?

    z97 still not ddr4 right?

Oh and why choose z97 over x99(2011-gen3.0?) or vice versa?

Upgrade now man, there's always something new right after you buy and it's not worth the long wait. I waited almost 3 years playing that game until I pulled the trigger and I'm really happy I did. There's always something to wait for, to upgrade to, but a man's gotta play. :)

If u need it now then upgrade. even if those new i7 oc better, it's not like they gonna be 100x better than 4770k.

If u can very much about OC, then wait for z97 and 4790K. as for waiting, it endless task as something better always lurks.

Nah z87 will be too, uefi firmware update (youtube haswell vs broadwell ~ 1.20min video).
Haswell refresh is already compatible, all big mobo manufactures released uefi firmware update.

Only if you're gonna buy sata-express SSD.

    Nope, ddr3 still.

X99 will have 40pcie lanes vs 16pcie lanes by mainstream, it will be expensive and ddr4 only.

Yeah Haswell per core performance is quite nice, especially at 4.5ghz+

no reason to go for i7. overpriced with low performance increase over i5. id upgrade now, but for half the price ^^

sir . hyper threading can become handy in running windows applications in the background
while gaming plus the 2 extra 2 mb smart cash, 8 mb cash is not the same as 6 mb cash . plus the title i7 is tempting for
some pc owners that never bought an i7 . plus some additional ocing abilities .
you never know when those games might start using hyper threading .
also gaming is not everything the i7 will run the system faster

you are right in a way and am right in a way

obv, there are benefits from getting a i7 over i5, but for gaming, which i assume here on guru3d, i7 is unnecessary:
According to various benchmark, there is maybe, if you are lucky, a 1% performance increase over an i5 when playing games. (assuming equivalent i5/i7 cpu models)

However, if you are running lots and lots of active applications at the same time which are very performance sensible (e.g. encoding), go for i7

Ive got a i7 and it wasnt really worth it... ill go for i5 if i ever decide to upgrade

100% wait for z97, personally I'm waiting for x99 but i can understand it is not a cheap solution.

It's useful, but in my opinion not $100 useful unless you use it for what it was really intended for (video rendering and compression). But if you have the $100, it's on you if you want it or not. I'm sure it will start to be at least slightly useful in games as time goes on. There's already a few where you get a few % from it, but maybe Watch Dogs will finally start a trend. Who knows.
