Someone wants to offer me about 620 $ for the computer in my sig + an EVO 120 GB,cooler master CM690 II case. What should I do ?
$620 for your system sounds like a good deal for you....but Do you want to build an entirely new system or are you just looking at using another system you have?
Will $1200 be enough to build a system more powerful than what you have now? You could very easily upgrade your graphics card and continue to use your 2500k. If it were my PC I'd just upgrade the GPU and go from there. Perhaps an SSD as well if you didn't already have it.
I already have an SSD. I was thinking about that possibility too. Do you think the 2500k still has long life ahead ? If I get a GTX980 for example will the CPU be able to handle it?
Yes it will be able to handle it. As for a long life, it doesn't look lik you'd need to improve on the CPU for the near future, just look at the threads about Broadwell and Skylake CPUs, many people decided to probably skip those two with overclocked Sandy Bridge CPUs already in their rigs.
Definitely. Your 2500k, especially overclocked, has plenty of life left in it. Since you already have an SSD, I'd look at getting a new GPU (GTX980 is a great choice) and perhaps a new PSU. Your VX550 is quite old at this point and a GTX 980 requires a minimum of 500w, which your 550 would be fine if it weren't so old.
The PSU is at least 5 years old if I remember correctly. It ran the same system with an overclocked GTX480 no problem.Maybe for the best to get a new one. How about the AMD fury Non X version? Never had an AMD card but this one seems promising.
If the Fury were at a lower price, I'd say definitely. For the same money as a Fury you can get a GTX 980 that will perform better and overclock much further. Value for money between the Fury (non-X) and GTX 980, the 980 wins. The upside to the Fury and Fury X is that they're very short cards, so if space is an issue they're a good solution.
I'm not sure what the situation in Romania is, but here the 980 is cheaper than the Fury, and for some models it's almost €100. So you should definately go with the 980, unless you save up a bit more to head for the Fury X or the 980 Ti (where I again would say get the Ti over the Fury X). Your case should be able to handle a 980's length, except you're going for some special cards / coolers (like the Inno3D cooler could be a tight fit).
I'm not sure about the price of the Fury because it's nowhere to be found around here. I will wait and see. The upgrade will probably happen around september.
Selling your 670 and getting something like 980 would be best thing you can do. I posted benchmarks in Skylake thread, exactly your 2500k at 4.6Ghz is little bit faster than Broadwell 5675c at stock. I think thats enough for gaming so jumping to another quad-core isnt really a good idea. Also, adding another 8GB system memory would be nice as well.
Very good arguments everyone, thank you. You have made my decision allot easier, I will simply upgrade my GPU and maybe a monitor later.
I'm with you on this one. However, you forgot to mention he should get a new psu to cope with the 2500k and the 970/980 especially if he decides to overclock. Personally, I wouldn't get anything less than 700/800w since overclocking requires some head room and getting a stable overclock will take over 500w of the minimum psu they recommended...
At 4.6GHz I wouldn't be surprised if the 2500K had another 2 years in it. Most modern games are pretty heavily GPU limited, I don't see your CPU getting in the way in the next year+. He won't need more RAM for gaming, that's for sure. 8GB is plenty. 16 is ridiculous overkill.
Depends what you play. I was playing Planetside 2 and game was easily using over 8GB with browser and bunch of apps open in the background. Start Citizen, Dying Light, Rust...some games that are using very close or 8GB of system ram.
