Howdy gurus, Long story short I am building my kid a Amd based gaming system, her 1st system we are both hyped-up about it!

    1) Amd A10 7870k Godvari 12 core-Bought.
She plays garys-mod and similar games so we don't need Titan-Z performance here guys, Just something with a little more kick then the I-gpu.I have been considering the following please tell me what you think.....

    1)Amd Diamond Radeon 7870 Ghz edition 2gb-$129.99
    2)Amd Diamond Radeon 7990 6gb -$250 Refurb at Mc-
    3) Amd Radeon R7 250- Run dual graphics with the Apu? _$60

The 7990 would be way overkill I know but it would look so dam nice hehe, I am leaning towards the Diamond 7870 Ghz edition, I think that's a perfect Gpu for her? what do you guys think??? :pc1:

I think 7870 is the best in that case,

a 7990 would be a huge overkill imo.

Besides a refurbished 7990 wouldn't last very long probably.

The realistic choice is the 7870 Ghz, the WANT but don't need choice is the 7990 lol. I am kinda paranoid about the whole dual-graphics thing I don't know? Worse case senairo I will be out $60 bucks.

I also have a Refrence Gtx 770 ( Titan cooler ) I can put in her system, but that would defeat the purpose of being an amd build. I could give her the 770 and use the chance to upgrade to a Gtx 690.

Soory I know its alot of choices, whats a man to do?

I gave my HD7970 to cousin's wife. It is well utilized by A10-7850k (thanks to newer drivers). But HD7990 would likely run to many issues.

Stock cooling on A10-7850k was bit noisy, so get something better to reduce noise and temperature. Maybe even consider disabling iGP as you install dedicated GPU (to prevent TDP throttling), I did disable it in her's.

And if not already, get SSD. I was stunned with MSI super fast boot as W8.1 takes around 4 seconds to do full reboot from SSD.
(responsiveness usually proves to be more important than total performance)

Proper GPU? I would personally not advise anyone to get GCN 1.0 now. So from GCN 1.2 there is only r9-285/380 (basically same thing, but 380 can be found with 4GB vram) with decent performance in acceptable price. Depending on use it may or may not be needed.

A Ssd is for sure on the list, thats a given. I haven't been able to find a decent Radeon 7970 that's a possibility too. I have seen em for as low as the 7870 costs.Hell I have even seen used R9 290S and 290x for close to $200 bucks. That might be a little to much for her tough,Not sure?

    1)Radeon 7970Ghz Diamond-$150 ish
    2)Radeon 7870 Ghz Diamond-$129.99
    3)Xfx R9 290-$235
    4)Xfx R9 290x-$250
5)Radeon 7990-I am scared to run this card honestly.
I have had so many headaches with my old Radeon 6970 crossfire set/up.One card would ramp up full fan speed while the others in idol state during gaming, then overheat and bam display driver stopped working. As long as I stick to 1 gpu I think ill be ok.

go with the 7970, AKA 280x

but seriously g-mod is not gonna take anything special at all so the r9 250/70 would be perfectly fine

290 or 290x ain't bad choices for that price. Will be bottlenecked for sure in many cases. If not those then 7970.
