So one of my hard drives took a complete dump, and I lost a boatload of great gaming data in the fallout. Never the less, I'm going to replace it with a 1TB drive and would like something quick and reliable. My OS drive is an SSD, so I'm not looking to get another one of those. Which do you think is the best HDD (or SSHD) listed here and why? If you don't like any of these, do you have another affordable and reliable option? Not looking to break the bank either. Thanks in advance c1: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236625&cm_re=1tb_hard_drive-_-22-236-625-_-Product https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178995&cm_re=1tb_hard_drive-_-22-178-995-_-Product This one is the more affordable option, but the fact the warranty is 2 years vs 5 above makes me wary a bit... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4575045
I will just leave this here.....I lost 4 drives of Seagate baracuda so I wont touch anything from them anymore I only buy Western-Digital Hdd but with prices being so low these days you might want to re-consider a Ssd instead,Thats just thinking out-loud if You must get Hdd go with WD.
I now only buy Hitachi/HGST NAS drives for desktop use. I've not had one fail and am using 2 Hitachis that have 66K and 46K hrs on the clock. The Backblaze report backs up my experience. This was after suffering failures all over the shop from other manufacturers. Although Samsung were the worst and they no longer make drives (that I see anyway). HGST saved me from despair.
As your already using an ssd for boot i think the firecuda`s benifit of the nand flash will be lost , average read time for the drives on paper....Wd - 150mbs FC - 156mbs which is no faster than most mechanical drives from both companies, power consumption seems to go in favor of Seagate and both drives have a 5 year warranty, i almost went for a firecuda myself but opt`d for a Sandisk UltraII 960gb ssd for storing most of my steam games....costs a lot more but is 3-4 times faster....doesn't get hot and is silent running and worth every penny.
^ Thanks for the responses everyone. So it seems that some have had some bad experiences with Seagate. My WD Caviar Blue died after not very long (in my book anyway), so I am a bit more leary on WD at the moment. I've read the Blacks are supposed to be their better line though... Mufflore, what do you think of this deal? It is refurbished though. I've read that that could be a good thing with HDD's (tested to work), or a bad thing. Thoughts? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1Z4-001J-00224&cm_re=hitachi_hard_drive-_-1Z4-001J-00224-_-Product or for not much more money, less storage but NOT refurbished... https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5AD5YN5264&cm_re=Ultrastar_7K4000-_-22-145-620-_-Product
I wont touch refurbished. Too many unknowns and a reduced warranty. If they had a full warranty there would be less reason for concern but even then... The 2TB drive is robust and performs well. Review http://www.storagereview.com/hgst_ultrastar_7k4000_review_hus724040ale640 I have the 4TB version that has been permanently running 24/7 for 2 years (power saving disabled) with no issues.
^ Thanks again for the recommendations. Based on reviews and word of mouth here, I ordered up the 2TB HGST Ultrastar, only from a different marketplace seller on the Egg. Newegg only had them refurbed, and the seller I linked above has some bad reviews on Google. Hopefully all goes well and I get a nice stable drive here for years to come!
Ah. In the UK I also can only ever find refurb 2TB drives. 2TB might not be in production any more. You might be better off plonking the cash for a 3TB or larger drive to be sure of what you are getting. Soz.
^ Well I ordered a supposed new one from a different Newegg marketplace seller with good reviews, so I hope I get what I paid for lol. Some sellers had new 2TB ones, just not Newegg themselves.
Good luck. We are all familiar with the Seagate woes but i took the plunge and so far the hard drive in my PS4 has had no issues. I generally only use Hitachi or WD but it all depends whats on offer at the time lol.
Well I received the HGST 2TB drive today and so far so good! I got it installed and formatted, and it is actually a bit quicker than my old WD Caviar Blue. I partitioned a small part of the drive to serve as a Windows backup, so if anything happens to my SSD in the future, I can boot from this drive with no issues. I'm glad I went with a reputable dealer on Newegg that appears to have gotten great reviews in ServerPartDeals. Let's hope she continues to perform well from here on out! Thanks again to everyone who offered recommendations and knowledge in this thread.
Thats how I use my drives. I do a full OS drive backup each month and have one of those on the hard drive for recovery operations. I'm glad it has worked out well.
