So after a month or two I've started having issues with my 7950 The first issue is that it would not hold the stock clocks of 900/1250. It would constantly downclock towards 501 on the core. After I bios modded it to add the +50% power limit on overdrive it would hold the 900/1250 clocks. The second issue is that it wouldn't overclock past 950 even with a stock core voltage of 1.25v. Now it has started to artifact at even stock clocks of 900/1250, and I'm thinking my overclock of 950/1375 wasn't stable. Now I can't seem to edit the voltage in the bios or bring it down in afterburner, but I'm wondering if pulling the voltage down to something like 1.15v would bring a little more stability? I'm guessing I got ebay screwed with an ex-mine card...
Never ever buy graphics card used by miners. Thats rule #1 for buying anything second hand. Do you still have warranty from it?
The ebay auction said that it was only a month old and only used for light gaming so I bit because it was a good price. I seriously doubt I have a warranty for it. It only seems to want to artifact if it goes above 75C, which it doesn't if I drop the clocks to 850mhz on the core. I'm just wondering if I could drop the core voltage to keep it under 75 if it would be more stable at 900mhz.
I'd definitively check on the warranty thing if I were you. Its kinda sad if you have to downclock it like that though.
If it is an XFX Double Dissipation, I heard they had issues on these cards with heat etc, may just get an unfortunate dud. Confirm you have done a clean install of the latest drivers using DDU and try again. I have it sometimes go down to 501 in certain applications.
Yeah thats the reason I went and ordered a Dual-X Sapphire one instead of the XFX DD edition. Just googling it lists a lot of issues.
Yea its an XFX DD, I've done several clean driver installs. I don't have any of the paperwork that came with it. Is there still a way to RMA it? I originally went with a sapphire dual-x but ended up returning it do to fan problems.
Best thing to do is speak to the eBayer and ask if they can help you RMA. If they're a decent eBayer they probably won't mind.
He's long gone. I don't have the paperwork or a receipt so I'm pretty sure I'm out of luck with XFX, plus I never registered the card. I also don't believe the previous owner registered it as well. I'll shoot XFX an email and see what they can do. I did notice that in vbe I can drop the clock and voltage of the performance state. If nothing else I'll drop the clock in the bios to 850 and drop the voltage to 1.169 down from 1.25 and see if that makes things a bit more stable. This rig is in desperate need of replacement and I'm just trying to hold off until skylake and the next round of GPUs. EDIT: I was able to register the GPU via XFX's website and submit a support ticket, lets see what happens.
dont no if its been said but check to see if the heatsink not been touched and to redo the paste maybe if its temp related
Well I hope xfx gets back to me soon as the card no longer remains stable underclocked and just crashes the whole system.
Thats pretty scary. XFX support was pretty much useless. They told me to uninstall the drivers, run DDU, and then Reinstall the drivers. I told them when I opened the support ticket that I had done that and it didn't work.
They've pretty much ignored me after the initial response of remove the drivers, run ddu, and then reinstall the driver. If they keep ignoring I'm looking at trashing the card and getting a GTX 970.
if the game your playing hardly stresses the gpu it will downclock. my cards do that on the elder scrolls oblivion for example.
