To the audio specialists out there. Is the SBX surround in those SoundBlasters actually an HRTF function that helps with headphones?
Yeah, played a bit with it yesterday, and i got a pleasant surprise that i could tell where stuff where around me. It's not a one button thing, you'll need to play with the slider and in some cases turn on or off the voice boost or the bass boost, but for the most part it works better than i would have guessed. Ever since EAX and A3D were abandoned i thought that only in 5.1 or 7.1 setups one could get positional audio around them.
Yes, play with the hardware and figure out exactly how the settings affect your playback. That's the only way to learn to tune for the best sound. Many new games offer built in 3D audio engines. Cards with 3D headphone modelling using HRTF are generally pretty cool but personally I still prefer a surround sound speaker system.
Of course. It's why i didn't try CMSS3D or SBX before. But sometimes i play some games during the night so...
