    Hello,

I think you can wait a little before upgrading... r9 290 not so much powerfull.

My card can go 1203/1750 MHz (gpu/mem) with 1256 mV.

And with bios v015.030.000.002, no more flickering on desktop and web...

Ive never used a 7900 series card, but I can tell you that the R9 290 is not a weak card, it has plenty of power

The 290 is a solid upgrade from a 7900 series card, although whether or not it's enough of an upgrade depends entirely on you. I've considered buying a 290/780 a few times, but due to the games I play and my current time constraints I've decided to just wait until the next major releases.

i play all the latest games but i dont see any major fps increase from 7970 to r9 290 especially in 1080p.that makes me to think about it twice before i buy it!

Why not get a 7970 or 280x and go crossfire?

At 1080p, I wouldn't do it. 3GB of VRAM is plenty for pretty much every game out there at that resolution. Plus the card is pretty fast already. I wouldn't upgrade if I were you.

I think that you're going about owning a video card the wrong way :3eyes:

...You don't buy a new car just because you're worried that your 2009 Corvette won't have a good trade in value next year - you sell your car when you're tired of all the problems it has on the road.

Same goes for video cards: you don't buy a new R9 290 just because you're worried that your 2011 Radeon won't have a good trade in value next year - you sell your Radeon when you're tired of all the problems it has running games.

If the resale value for your 7970 is more important to you than how games are currently playing at 1080p, then that's your call. But as a fellow gamer playing at 1080p, I can say I was TOTALLY happy with Crossfire 5870's, until BF4 came out. BF4 doesn't play well with 1GB of VRAM, so I got a 290, and now I have 4GBs of VRAM, which is mostly wasted at our resolution.

    __Off Topic Info Follows__
Back in '13 November I bought a used [stock] R9 290 ($300), but that died back in May, so I replaced it with a used Tri-X 290 ($330). My Tri-X gave me Black Screen issues almost immediately, I assumed it was because it was used in a mining rig for a few months, but once I lowered the clock speeds with MSI afterburner the black screens have almost disappeared! ...Due to the fact that I feared my Black Screens were due to a hardware issue, I bought a used [stock] 290X ($315) a few days ago. I don't think I'll even bother installing it, it'll just sit around as a spare R9 card if my Tri-X dies on me.

i dont have a single problem with my msi 7970!!its a champ card and run all the games like water!!so u recommend me to keep it?rly thx for ur opinions!!i dont want to sell it only cuz of the lower resell value later but also to buy something more powerful.as i told i think that if i ll buy r9 290 it ll be a waste for 1080p compared to my 7970,thats why i dont know what to do!!

The only wise thing to do is saving money and waiting for a real upgrade (next gen gpu that will handle 4k easily for example...)

I buy a new card every 2/3 years and it's ok for gaming fine!

If there's no particular game you want to increase the performance and\or IQ in; then I don't see the need for switching out well performing and reliable card.

Although, I know the feeling of wanting something new only because its new :p

I had a Tri-X, and I can vouch that it was super silent, and was an awesome card (except in my case I bought it used and I was getting the "Black Screen" from it, so I returned it).

Despite my Tri-X having issues, I would still recommend getting the Tri-X above the Direct CU II, because the Tri-X still has a better reliability rating (less card failure/issues). ...I was able to significantly lower the frequency of black screens by simply under-clocking the card to stock levels using MSI Afterburner.

    Tri-X
