SATA3 drive on SATA2 port will work in SATA2 mode.
    Afaik, you need <UEFI + 64bit Windows7 or newer + GPT disk layout> to use 3TB hdd.

Edit: If you will not boot from 3TB hdd, then <any bit Windows7 or newer + GPT>. And not USB.

I just want to keep my data on that 3tb drive. I will have a wd 500gb for installation of Windows and game / software. My Pc will recognize that right? What you suggest an internal or external drive? which one has better lifetime?

If you will apply GPT layout to drive it will be recognized.
Internal drive can suffer from overheat. External drive can suffer from mechanical damage (and I saw such drives a lot). To be recognized external 3TB drive should be eSATA, SATA, SCSI - not USB.

    Edit: Use diskpart.exe
