Question Adding wireless N router to home network - 05-27-2012, 15:22 | posts: 3

I want to add a wireless N router to my home network keeping the Verizon MI424WR router as primary. I need wireless access from 1st floor TV (Vizio M470ST) with about 30-40 ft distance to router. Which router will give me the greatest coverage in the 600N series?

Thx for your assistance.
Les

1-you want to use the Verizon's router as a basic modem disabling WiFi and use the second router with WiFi enable?
2-you want to use both routers with WiFi enable and used the secondary as an AP /repeater ?
3-WiFi cand be great,or can be a great pain in the back
Could you consider a cheap powerline adapter to suit your network needs?

If it's just streaming video, wireless works just fine, it's just never recommended for any latency-sensitive applications like gaming or servers.

OP, when you said 30 - 40ft, is that on the same floor? If so, just drag a 30 - 40ft. CAT6 cable should do. If it's on two separate rooms, just put a second router on the second floor, flash DD-WRT and configure it as a repeater bridge.

The Verizon router is on 2nd floor in an 2 story addition and the TV is on 1st floor in the original footprint of the house. TV can not complete access to the router after seeing the SSID and entering the passphrase. So there are 2 exterior walls to go thru. I want to keep the Verizon router and just use the new router for wireless access (I would disable wireless access from the 1st router).

The more walls it has to go through, the weaker it is, you might have to put a router per floor. To be honest, just either phish cables yourself or get someone to do it for you. It'll probably cost almost the same.

Delta,
Thanks for the reply. I already have one computer networked via wired cat5 cable from the 1st floor to the 2nd. Can I add the new router in that router connection upstream of the computer to get wireless access on the 1st floor? If so then I can get an 801N router and need recommendation for the it. What needs to be done in setting up the 2nd router? Will I be able to see it from my computer on the 2nd floor?
