I want it but I feel like it's a dumb move. I can afford it, and I'd be able to run 4K easily. The 1070 will go to sons pc. 1080 isn't cheap. Opinions ? You can see my current setup under my user name.

A 1080 isnt really enough for 4K gaming. It can only hold 60FPS in a few titles at that resolution unless you turn settings down. I would wait it out and see what the Vega 490 and speculated 1080Ti bring to the table

That is the worst upgrade Ive ever seen someone do. YOu serious ? You payed 500 dollars for the 1070 now you wanna spend 700 dollars and get a 1080 for what ? That is 1200 dollars. YOu have a solid card, the difference is minimal compared to 1080 if you OC.

If you get a low of 48fps with a 1070 youll get a low of 52fps with a 1080. Is that 4fps worth 700 dollars. Your upgrading the same GENeration, that is a cardinal sin. Wait until the X399 comes out then sell your 1070 and buy the x299 or x399 , basically nvidias next gen card. If I upgrade to a 1080 that's a huuuuuuuge difference compared to what I have. Your fine my friend just enjoy the games and stop worrying about 5fps difference. Don't do it, you will regret it big time when nvidias next gen card comes out. Save your money, buy a SSD if you don't have one already or upgrade your RAM. You do not need a video card upgrade especially same Generation.

I don't think nVidia next gen card can handle 4K @ 60fps constant .... more like 30fps and slows down in big servers with lots of players. A 4k card that will scream is 2 to 3 years away still. I get 1fps when I set resolution to 4k on any game. Im thinking a 1080 will get 30fps and drops here and there. Where as 1080p will give you a constant 60fps and never drop unless you use FXAA which I dont recommmend. At 4k you wont even need to do AA ,, UT4 looks sick but 1fps is not gonna cut the rug. ANyone share your experiences with 4k gaming.. Thanks

Get a used 980 Ti for your son, and keep your 1070 GTX until we see what move nVidia makes. How old is your son ? If hes very young then grab a 960 GTX for around 200 dollars and call it a day. Invest in more RAM or SSD for you or your son. gl

Simply put, the GTX 1080 is a very good 1440p GPU. I mean, you're here on Guru3D and there's a large selection of reviews that would directly answer your performance questions. So I guess, it is either you feel it is worth it, or it isn't. I'm in a similar boat with my 980Ti. A single GTX 1080 isn't enough to drive my 4K display at 60 FPS for just about every recent AAA title without seriously reducing quality settings. The TITAN (P) isn't either. So I guess, at this time, there isn't a 4K gaming GPU. And the increase in performance isn't worth it to me....I might chance my mind though...SLI? Maybe Volta will be the first.

Like the others have told you; A 1080 is not enough for 4K at 60 fps. Certainly not with any reasonable amount of details turned up.

4K gaming at a tolerable frame rate with a single card is not something that seems to be in store for the near future.

1080 is 20% more powerful than a 1070, you do your match.

Even at 1440p the 1080 isn't a max detail performer.

I'm sure there are a couple of exceptions with badly optimized games. But for the most part it handles 1440p well. So does my 980Ti, but I'd call it a very good 1080p GPU.

Yes, he has a $500 and a $700 card for $1200. Did you expect him to pay $1000 for those two cards or something? One goes in his rig, one in his son's rig. What's wrong with that?

OP, honestly, you blink and you miss the extra performance you get from the 1080. If you want to give the 1070 to your son, wait for the 1080ti buy that, give your son the 1070.

You are the only one who seemed to pick up on that about my sons rig, thank you. My sons machine had a 6 series geforce card. It died. I have to replace it anyway. I was thinking give him mine and get the 1080 or another 1070 for myself, That was all. Thank you all for your input and opinions in case i was missing something. I really appreciate them...including the insult.

6 series? In that case anything would be much better like a GTX 1050.

If you want to upgrade you should probably wait a month or so, should see some 1080Ti info.

I think most people who took the time to read what you wrote understood. I have a 1080 and love it. Like the above poster said wait a month before buying a 1070/1080 as the 1080TI is coming out in under a month, and vega may make an appearance soon. The 1070 and 1080 will most likely drop in price, or you can pick up a 1080 cheaply by someone selling to upgrade to a TI. SLI 1080's could do 4k gaming but SLI is gimmicky at best right now. You have a few options

I have an X34 Predator 3440x1440 , and have been running every game I play on the highest settings and have had NO issues.

Also pay no mind to Hammie ..... he has been commenting on people's post recently very negatively and often he has no clue of what he is talking about. Yesterday he said that 4k looks worse than 1080p with AA turned on, which is false and actually quite laughable. I apologize on his behalf.

I did get the 1080. It is significantly faster than the 1070 was. I am happy with the 1080. In my opinion, it was worth it.i know many of you would wait for the 1080 To version but I am small form factor. I bought an 1080 mini itx. There likely won't be a 1080 Ti mini itx version.

What actual gaming boost clock did the 1070 has and what boost clock for 1080?

I did the upgrade,, but for QHD not UHD..
with the 1070 I was missing the last 20%,, which the 1080 gave me.

If you have the money, do it! There isn't anything wrong in upgrading, despite what others, who don't have the money to do it, tell you. Hell, I'd buy a 10 core CPU and a Titan if I had the cash, but I don't so I found my middle ground.

WTF are you talking about man? Seriously!

First of all, the 1080 is 20% faster than the 1070 and depending on the game, the benefit in FPS can be fairly big.

I have a 4K TV and a 1080 and I can tell you that the 1080 is not a 30fps card at 4K. Sure, it cannot do 60fps in all games at max detail but it's not as bad as you say it is. I've tried a number of games and with some tweaking, I can play comfortably at 4K (though I would prefer to own the 1080Ti) in several cases. Watch Dogs 2, Dragon Age : Inquisition, Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Forza 3 are games that run at 60 or close to 60fps. Witcher 3 on the other hand is a tough case and only manages around 45fps.

I definitely think that Volta will be a serious contender for 4K@60fps since the 1080Ti will do quite well in that department (without AA which is the only true thing you've said)

Also FXAA has almost no impact on FPS so telling anyone that the 1080 doesnt handle 1080p with FXAA is a blatant lie.

It's important to mention what 1440p monitor we're talking about here. For a 1440p/60Hz monitor the 1080 is more than enough, for a 1440p/144Hz monitor...not so much (I have one so I'm sure).

I wish I could try this but the only two resolutions that my TV supports at 60Hz is 4K and 1080p :( All other resolutions are locked to 30Hz.

I haven't tried that but when I tried playing in 1440p I only got 30Hz.
