Just downloaded RivaTuner to try to get my evga 8800gt cooled down. I don't really understand RT's relationship with my video card. Do I actually have to open RivaTuner manually every time I want it to control the fan, or should the settings I saved in it control it all the time manually? Thanks for helping a noob.

It should keep the settings without opening it. What I do just for verification is make rivatuner startup with windows and have it display in my toolbar is my gpu temp and m fan speed. Just so I know what exactly is going on.

Well, RT will load settings when you load the program. Simply load at start up so the setings are loaded also.

I have the GT also. you should read the guide here to change fan speeds as temps go up. I don't like using the tmax/tmin stuff..it's all very complicated. I found the guide telling you how to set fan speed to be most useful.
