1st XFX 1000W PRO1000W Ltd Black Edition Single Rail 12V 83A 24PIN ATX Full Modular 80PLUS Platinum PSU 2nd Silverstone Strider 1000 Plus 1000W Modular Power Supply ATX 24PIN 135mm Fan 80A 80+ Silver Black or do I go with a Corsair Enthusiast Series TX850M 850W ATX Modular Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan 5 Year Warranty that is cheaper?
I have bought a ATI-6870 It needs more power then my current one can handle. I am planning a few odd upgrades in the near future. I have 6 Hard drives a few extra usb connections, and I would rather have more power in the PSU and a solid power supply for Overclocking.. I have also found a Thermaltake SP-1200M 1200W ATX 12V 2.3 & EPS 12V 2.92 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Full Modular Active.
Thermaltake is a step down. The Corsair is probably closest to your power needs though still over kill but is a solid unit.
I have a lot more power than I need but everywhere I read 50% use is the sweet spot in terms of efficency I have 1300w evga PSU 10 year warranty is what worked for me. I liked that I got lots of recommendations but they were all pointing me toward 80-90% use at load was ok but not room for PSU degradation and upgrades and I will keep this PSU a long time
80+ PSU's must be at least 80% efficient across the entire load range. Only cheap brands without 80+ or active PFC have a "sweet spot" of 50%. My system is plugged into a wattmeter and it's never read more than 600W from the wall. Since my PSU is 80+ bronze this means actual DC power draw is about 475W max.
I agree mine is gold rated so across the range it must meet gold standard but at 50% it's at platinum level it can't be labeled platinum as it can't achieve that across the range but it easily achieves gold
I have the Silverstone Strider Gold 1200W PSU and to be honest its a beast! The finish on the unit it self is awesome its got this textured mat finish to it that makes it extremely durable and its completely modular. The cables were pretty well braided as well (not the best braiding but it will do). Its overkill for my system at the moment as I did have Crossfire 7970's but sold the one card last year as the drivers were pretty crap. Wish I had kept the card now as the drivers now are pretty beast.
