Hello gurus finally replaced my prehistoric gtx 780 it served me well but I got the 980 for $100 bucks so couldnt pass up the chance. As far as clock-speed goes on these whats the average gpu core clock these things can hit? I know its all luck of the draw but just wondering what to expect...My 780 maxed-out @ 1165 Mhz gpu core,I think that was on boost not sure? The 980s can run higher clocks from what I read so yeah.....Also is my Cpu going to be a problem Fx 8320e @ 4.1 Ghz? Thank you guys in advance.Nick

In my opinion with the CPU, it will be just fine for a GTX 980. I had tested a Fury X with a FX 8320 stock last year and it kept up really good. Even in the BF1 beta.

Cant help with clocks though. Last Nvidia gpu was a GTX 970 and I kept those stock as they were reference blower cards for SLI.

I read on asus site they can hit 1500Mhz on gpu and 1525 mhz boost (strix model) I guess we will find out soon lol. They have a 10 power phase on those so iam hoping to hit some decent overclocks. Nowhere near the Gtx 1080s mhz clock but still way way better then my old evga acx 780.

Not worth it IMHO unless playing at 1440p+ in newest physx games with the 980.

A good 980 can hit anywhere from 1506 to 1557mhz(more on golden samples) when boosting. Overvoltage can sometimes help.
Vram is complete lottery, 7600 effective is common and 8000 is possible especially with Samsung chips.

Sweet, thats what iam talkn about! Still an improvment over my gtx 780 regardless of overclock.I am curious however how did Nvidia manage to make the 980 Faster with a lower bus and less shader prossesors compared to 780? Must be the clock-speed huh? 2304 on 780 and 2034 I think on 980.

I am happy regardless./Thank you guys for your input.Nz

Better question is how the 780 is even slower than 970, barely faster than 1050 ti.

So the deal you did is good. 980 should be quite bit an upgrade for you.

I am happy with it Honestly,I do not need anything stronger at the moment anyway.Buddy of mine wanted to sell me his Gtx 1080 instead so he can get (ti) version but I see no need for it at the moment using only 1080p 1 monitor @ 60 hz and a ****ty cpu/motherboard as well, If anything this 980 is Overkill for this system. Thanks Undying.

The 980 is still a very good card, especially @1080p. @1440p it'll do pretty good as well.

My Strix couldn't get to 1500mhz, around 1450 was the most I could get out of it @125% power limit. It would lock up at anything higher.

Still a firestrike score of a little over 15000 (Graphics score) isn't too bad for a 980.
    If I still was @1080p instead of 4k, I wouldn't have switched to a 1080ti.

Yea mine does about 1450~ stable with no voltage boost, had it up to 1600 with a modded BIOS but was too loud and hot, maybe under water

With max stock BIOS vCore it's stable at 1500 but for the extra heat and fan noise the extra 50MHz isn't really worth it

I was lucky with my Gigabyte 980 Gaming.
Was running 1531mhz, 7800vram stock voltage, stock power limit.
Gigabyte never seizes to impress me with their cards.
