Hi guys, I would appreciate it very much if you can help me with my dilemma. I would like to know if a standard Nvidia GTX 460 will be too much for the following system: Processor: Intel E7400 Motherboard: Asrock G31M-S R2.0 Memory: Hynix 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 Hard drive: Western Digital 3200AAJS Power supply: 600watts generic, but I’m going to get a Corsair HX650W Monitor: Acer 17” V173 1280X1024 pixels OS: Windows 7 ultimate 32-bit Can you tell me if my processor will bottleneck the GTX 460? If so, Should I get a GTS 450 instead? Should I get better and more ram, perhaps 4 GBs? Thank you in advance your help.
cpu overclocked? 2gb of ram? low resolution I am going to say yes. my recomondation is more system ram, overclock the cpu, and get a 64bit operating system. the bottleneck isnt great but is there. the lower the resolution the greater it is
Thank you for your suggestions. What about a GTS 450 then? I can get the ram and the 64bit system but I'm not sure about OCing the CPU, I would probably have to buy a fan since I'm running a stock fan.

erh @ 1280X1024, depending on the game, it will move towards cpu bound a bit. overclocking the cpu will help. If your playing games like fear, even at your monitor resolution, it is tremendously gpu bound, in other words, you can have your cpu at stock speed then overclock it to 4ghz, fps wont make jack squat difference, quality settings is another factor too. If you turn everything off then set it too 1280X1024 then fear more move a lil bit to cpu bound. It all depends on what game you play and why are you using a 1280X1024 monitor with that gpu, you should be going at least, at least 1920X1200 resolution. I am using a gtx 216 and can run any mmorpg on the market with excellent quality settings, with the exception of ffxiv online, you jack that up with supersampling 16Xaaq, ambient occlusion, runs worse then crysis, looks outstanding but runs like poop on my overclocked 216.
I would also strongly recommened going to x64 and install 4gigs or higher ram. win7 loves ram, just like vista does. mine idle, over a gig easy on idle. Just download the 7600 rtm for free, and burn it to a blank dvd disc. I am still using the 7600 rtm build since last year,still get the updates, running 5 old wd raptors in raid 0, Runs EXCELLENT, raid is very very stable, even better then xp, xp I had run into some problems with raid, win7? nope.
I use a 1280X1024 monitor because I know that at high resolutions the GTX 460 is going to be crap in a year for new games and I want to have all settings maxed out in most games for at least 1 year. Anyways, the system I have is crap so I think I'm going to build another system. Thank you for your comment.
The Asrock G31-M R2.0 does allow overclocking, I checked the manual. But that MB is not good for gaming so I've decided to build another system with the following. MB: Msi P55 A-G55 Processor: Intel Core I5 760 Memory: Corsair Dominator 4gb (2x2gb) Ddr3 1600 Cl8 Video card: EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 1GB 256bit Power supply: Corsair HX 650w I guess these parts should do the trick just fine, but I'm going to have to wait for a couple of months. I live in South America and computer parts are up to 4 times more expensive than in the US. Please make any comments on the system I'm proposing.
just make sure you get 1gb 460gtx model and i agree about cpu bottleneck, it will hold you back in quadcore oriented games, other than that you'll be fine.. edit: that system looks fine, although a i870 would be allot better for longer investment ( those extra 4 virtual cores could help in the near future) :nerd:
If he upgraded his monitor to a 1920x1080/1200 one, that would remove much of the CPU bottleneck. Plus it would give him a much better visual/gaming experience.
Do not get a gts 450 they are junk for gaming as said above I would much rather get a gtx 460 and when you upgrade your rig down the road transfer it into the new pc. An for your cpu if you have a decent motherboard you should be able to overclock it quite a bit to help with bottle necking issues. I ran a gtx 460 in my old pc with a phenom ii x4 965 and I believe it was slightly bottlenecked but not by a large amount e7600 ...especially ocd a few hundred mhz should be able to play along nicely enough to hold you over tll you have money more for more parts.
Mario-Newegg.com has tons of PNY GTX 470 for only 269.99 I would consider getting that for the measily 39 dollars more then the gtx 460 and will be far more powerful...and i'm sure other people will say an overclocked gtx 460 is as fast as a gtx 470...but most dont take into consideration you can also overclock the 470 :]
I'd have to say no if you have a 3.4Ghz overclock. Just because it won't be as fast in like 5 games (BC2 for example) doesn't mean the processor is a bottleneck.
The fact that it wont be as fast in any game due the CPU means it's bottlenecked. What you are saying is that it should not matter, which is totally opinionated.
