My motherboard is acting up, so I plan to replace is pretty soon.
What would you guys recommend here?
Anything is seemingly going to be a big jump from my old processor.
Perhaps go with the 8 core for compatibility with the new consoles?

Between the two procs that you state in the title, I say better to go for FX 8320

What's your overall budget for both Mobo and CPU?

FX 8320 and a nice Heatsink and overclocking or stock would be a nice jump.

Then again the I5 is nice just for games.Hard to recommend something op if you don't
tell us what your using it for.

When I was playing with an FX 8350, it wasn't that much better (at least stock) compared to my old Phenom 2. If you have good cooling and can get it close to the 5Ghz mark, it's a nice upgrade, but otherwise I would take the 3550P.

Thanks guys. I'm just using it for games and school. Run at 1080p, so nothing too crazy. Just trying to stay affordable. Can't spend much more than these cost.

If you bump the multiplier up to 37 on the i5 3350P, it should perform close to the i5 3570K at stock (3.7ghz vs 3.8ghz, so not much difference). Unfortunately, being a processor with a locked multiplier, 3.7ghz is the max you can get on it. If you're not willing/unable to push the limited multiplier overclock....you'd probably be better with the 8320. You'd have to get a Z77 motherboard to overclock, btw.

I still think it's a better buy than the 8320. To overclock the 8320 sufficiently you need a fairly expensive cooler. An ivy quad at 3.7 is well more than enough for any game out as it is.

Given the options here, go with the 8320. You can get a decent overclock (4ghz-ish) on stock cooling, matching the performance of the 8350.

The thing is that the 8320 even at 4.0 is slower than the 3350p at gaming.

I don't think so. Depends on what game you're talking about really

Damn, now that is hilarious. :)

I would like to ask two users of this forum with the same OS and similar systems to do some benchies.

My i5 2400 is similar to the 3350p if not the same, anyone with FX83xx W7 64 + HD7850 2GB please PM me.

The i5 is superior in the majority of games, so I would go with it for gaming.

^ I think in games that use 6 threads or more like BF4 are where the 8350 (or 8320 @ 4ghz) pulls ahead nicely. You also have to consider overall desktop performance

Hmm, i don't know if i believe that much because despite some games are using more cores they are lowering the usage on the others so...
