I recently bought a new PSU (Cooler Master V850) along with another GTX 970 to SLI my computer. However, I'm hearing a high pitch sound coming from the bottom of my computer where the power supply is. I'm running OCCT to stress test and I've noticed that the sound goes away when I click on the benchmark test, but the noise comes back when I click back to the monitor menu. Is this a sign of a bad PSU, or does it need time of use to settle down? I didn't hear this on my old Corsair HX650, even with my SLI setup temporarily installed.
Is it more common in newer PSUs today? I want to make sure if it's just a noise I can put up with or if it's a concern to RMA.
My PSU coil whines when the systems turned off but there isn't any when it's on even stress testing. It's common with PSU and GPU's, some people just don't hear it. There's a chance another PSU of the same model won't have it and there's a chance it will be worse. A bit like monitors and backlight bleed.
Out of 8 power supplies in various gaming rigs (550w-850w) none of mine are particularly noisy, no whine is discernible. The fans are the only thing audible. My GPUs are another story. Doesn't mean anything is necessarily wrong. I've had office PCs that would make some PSU noise. On a ~$200 component, I'd personally send it back. As mentioned, the next one may or may not do it or possibly be worse. Either way, if it annoys you, I'd RMA while you can. I'm not a fan of CM but those V series are supposed to be good units.
You can fix the coil whine is easy but u will void your warranty .... basically you need to desolder the chokes and dip them in varnish for transformers or if your soldering skill are not good u can "paint" the coils with a paintbrush.
