GTX 970 Owners Thread

I'm planning to buy another 970 prior to XMAS (and give this one to my daughter). I'm hoping by then they'll all be in stock so I can choose the model I really want. I grabbed this particular 970 as it was the only viable option when I purchased 4 weeks ago though there was also some Palit(?) brand 970 in stock that I wasn't ready to try. Everything else was/is sold out pretty regularly.

I'm leaning towards the MSI or Gigabyte 970 models.

Got round to testing around for my max overclock today.

Was disappointed to find the max stable I can go on the core is around 1585mhz.

No amount of extra voltage helped.
I could do 1534mhz with stock voltage which is ~1212mv for my card.

1585mhz needed a little bum by +20mV in inspector, but interstingly going higher didn't let me get stable over 1585mhz.

Ram still on 8000mhz, may try to push that higher. I wanted to get 12K Firestrike without having to OC my CPU or RAM.
Sadly it wasn't to be !!!

I can finally use my build because I have a WiFi-card installed now, haha.

I got a MSI GTX 970 4G aswell and I can't wait to talk about it more in this thread, everyone enjoy your cards!

 

FWIW, that voltage that GPU-Z and AB reports is not true voltage, its a lot higher, but yes the highest is like 40mv+ any more doesn't increase voltage .

I ran some test other day reading what the real voltage is from the VRM/chokes and for mine MSI 970 , with GPU-Z saying 1.218 the reading from DVM was really 1.28-1.3 depending on load .

So its a lot higher than what software reports and probably why increasing it doesn't yield much .

 

Is this with a modded BIOS? Because that is what you'll need if you have any hope of hitting higher.

That being said, hitting 1585 with stock bios is fantastic.. you should be thrilled with that, not disappointed.
I can only get mine to boost up to 1540 before it starts to crap out, but I haven't yet tried with the nolimits BIOS that I flashed last night.

 

MSI and Gigabyte seem to be delivering the best quality concerning 970GTX. I'm really pleased with my MSI and how cool it runs, should've bought two of those from the start.

I was only disappointed as i've seen others on OCN getting 1600mhz +

But in general i'm really pleased with this card, 1534mhz stock voltage I can't grumble at.

Just did another run at 1585/8020 and almost nudged 11900 in firestrike, wonder if raising the memory higher will get me some more points ???

anything over 1500+ is great if it game stable, many say 1600 for 1 run in BM but its not really stable for most IMO in long run (running real games for hrs+ ).

On memory clocks go slowly from like 7600+ as you might get were scores go down, especially near 8k mark .
Just go slowly till artifacts or lower scores .

I would tend to agree.. same goes for the Strix.. seems like these three are the best of the best overall, even in despite some of them having whining and I/O issues.

Now that I've ramped down the default fan speed on my G1s they run silent at idle while maintaining low temps. I can now keep my side panel off and barely even hear my pc even though its 4 feet away from me.. awesome!

Going to start pushing the clocks though this week to see what its really capable of with higher volts.

I'd be amazed if people on OCN are getting to 1600 with stock bios.. they would have to have a diamond card to push that far.. I don't even think that stock bios provides enough volts for this to happen.

Raising memory would help.. but what I found gave me a huge boost to my score was to run my 2600k with HT on.. I went from ~15000 to ~17000 on my overall score.

 

No game would be stable at 1600 MHz with default BIOS. When the card downclocks in low utilisation situations TDR:s will happen for sure.

Mine seems OC'd already lol

I don't mean the factory OC, that says it's 1279Mhz in the specs but mines at 1341.6Mhz. Is that normal?

normal, it depends on model .

my MSI 970 did 1367 out of box, there factory OC .
you can't go by boost value in GPU-Z, in game it will boost much more .

 

This is with heaven running in the background, enabling OC mode in the MSI gaming app takes it to 1367Mhz too

ahh, I didn't install MSI gaming app , I just use MSI AB4.0 for GPU related things .

 

the 1342 was before the gaming app was installed.

Impressed so far, quite the upgrade from my R9 280.

 

Nice, I'm amazed to see that everyone says they run so quiet even while that monster has 3 fans.
