I downloaded Nvidia driver version 340.52 last week. Since then I have been unable to delete the Nvidia Package Launcher that I downloaded. It keeps telling me that the action can't be completed because the file is open in windows explorer. I cannot find it anywhere in my task manager. Any ideas on how to get this file deleted?
You can restart Windows shell in task manager by killing and invoking new explorer.exe process. Also you can kill Installer or msiexec.exe or TrustedInstaller. Also you can use http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896655 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897556
I had already tried restarting Windows shell the way you described, and that had not worked. I cannot find msiexec.exe or TrustedInstaller anywhere in the process list. The first link I was able to use with no issues, but I do not understand how to use the second one. I may just be stuck with this file until I decide to reformat my computer.
Give this utility a shot.... http://filehippo.com/download_unlocker/ Make sure you use the advanced install option so you don't install the tool bar.
I have the same problem, every time I download nvidia install packages I can't delete them and I suspect it's Icaros thumbnailer's fault, probably it tries to read the properties of the file and creates some sort of loop that keeps the file busy in explorer. To delete it open a cmd window with administrator privileges, then I type "cd" followed by the full path where the installer is. Once cmd lists the correct folder I copy the name of the installer, I close explorer.exe through the task manager and I write "DEL" followed by the filenameofthepackage.exe and press enter. Then I restart explorer from the run option of the task manager and the file is not there anymore.
You can go into the folder its in properties and take control of it, full control, worked for me anyway when it happened to me long time ago.
