Hi, Just came over this article http://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/309mea/samsung_to_allegedly_acquire_amd_in_an_attempt_to/ (To stop confusion.. i've heard of reddit reffering to the article linked to the thread ) Anyone think it would happen? Would it benefit AMD in anyway? Never heard of this site before so i take the rumor with a spoonfull of salt.
AMD with Samsung money and fabs could do miracles. What I am afraid is the infamous support that Samsung gives to its products.
Samsung is not going to buy AMD. That rumor has circulated several times now and each time both Samsung and AMD have debunked the rumor. The x86 license is non-transferable.
How could anyone be sure? Yet pretty much everyone takes as granted that Samsung would just start throwing money AMD way the moment they acquire them, regardless how (un)healthy the state of the business That is one possibility, and imho not very likely. If losing company's value several times over in the span of several years and then being taken over was a sound plan, everyone would be doing it.
once you have a new majority owner (51%), the business is considered transferred, as are all its assets including IP. This is because owning 51% of the shares means you have majority voting rights, and no one can outvote you. You can now do whatever you want.
If control of AMD changes, AMD loses the x86 license. A buyout implies change of control. AMD would have to buyout Samsung to keep the x86 license.
Well I don't go to Reddit but since you mentioned it I checked it out see what info is available so far and ran into the cold hard truth: http://imgur.com/gjCWpWn
At the moment, nor does the market: http://www.bidnessetc.com/38063-heres-why-ubs-downgraded-advanced-micro-devices-inc-amd-to-sell/ Samsung can wait and unless somebody else steps in, buy AMD for less money in the future.
