Finally got my rig... can't wait to put all the nice stuff on it.

the results of the test after enabling pro abilities, without being able to actually get ti to say quadro, are:

does anyone know why I can't get it to say quadro? not that I'm complaining, but it's nice to have :)

6800 GPUs are AGP native. In order to work on a PCI-E bus, they require a bridge chip. NVStrap cannot change the PCI-ID, because it's hardwired on the bridge chip. That's why it cannot say Quadro - it's still reading the hardwired info from the bridge, although your GPU is programmed to behave like a Quadro (some apps that specificaly look for a Quadro PCI-ID will not work)

    I see...
I thought they were already making native 6800 chips :(
    well, thats life :)

There seem to be no PCI-e native 6800 chips - the newer designs only moved the bridge chip to the actual GPU die (it's integrated with the GPU).
The only GeForce GPUs that are really PCI-e native are the 6200 & 6600 series.

    ok.
seems like this thread will put to rest all those 6800GT/U to Quadro questions to rest.

and thanks for all your help :)

So does this mean that all native pci-e 6600 series cards (not rev4) are fully moddable to quadros??
    Was anyone successful with this?

as far as I know, any modification to quadro of a less-then-6800 GT card is bogus. you try to mod an already crippled card to a pro card.

I could be wrong, but it seems like it's best to stick with the quadro-like performance, and not worry about the name of the card.

Actually, yes - but good luck finding 6600 PCI-E cards with GPU revisions A1, A2 or A3... ;)
Not true - not all Quadros are 6800GT or better equivalents. Quadro FX 540 is actually a plain GeForce 6600 and Quadro FX 1400 is a GeForce 6800 NU. ;)
If the pro capabilities mod works fine, i absolutely agree - but unfortunately, there are still some software utilities that really need a proper Quadro PCI-ID in order to install & work... :(

    true :)

for instance, my favorite realview in solidworks. It's a compromise, but I prefer to have good performance, for about $500, then pay $2500 which I don't have :)

and again, thanks to unwinder :)

Sorry to bump a somewhat older thread. I was thinking about getting a 6800 GT PCI-E card for my workstation. If I can unlock pro capabilities, I'd be more then happy. These programs you talk about, that check which card you have, what programs are these? I know Maya is pretty sensitive, but I'll just be using AutoCAD, 3DSMax/Viz, and Sketchup (which I know for a fact works well on a 6800). And is there a pretty good chance if I buy a brand new 6800 GT/U PCI-E I will be able to unlock pro capabilities? I'm totally outta the loop with the newer cards, bridges, revisions and what not.

    okie.
I got a 6800GT rev. 1, so it has unlock pro cap. possible, but you won't see "quadro" in detected hardware.
since maxtreme and other options (like realview in SW) want a quadro ID, you won't be able to use those special options, but the quality of the work, and the speed of it in pure opengl terms is very good.
only problem is, that newer editions are impossible to unlock.
