I am planning to get a new mobo for my fx 8350,Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3.
And planning on buying either GTX 770 or R9 280X and this all together is my budget maxed out.
I just want to play at FULL HD resolution with almost all settings maxed out.
Is there a need to overclock my cpu ?
I don't want to honestly and it is just for gaming purpose.

Please let me know and share your ideas.

Yeah you could probably squeeze it to about 4.4Ghz if you still have the stock cooler.

If you get a GTX 770/280x you won't get bottlenecked by your cpu oc'd or not.

Will you need to OC that cpu = No

Should you OC that cpu = Yes

It is so easy with the FX's to OC them, just do NOT use the stock cooler, get a very inexpensive Cooler Master Hyper 212+ (or EVO) and you will be happy with it.
(Get that cooler even if you don't OC, it will be so much quieter :) And will keep your cpu temp way lower than the stock cooler.

That's my opinion :) I build PC's for a living, good luck with your new build!

PS - get the 280X too, it has more VRAM, I know your just playing at 1080P, but VRAM is getting more and more important with every new game.

Unless you can find a 4GB 770 somewhere for a good price :)

I guess i will get the given components and will overclock later when i can save enough for CoolerMaster Hyper Evo 212.
I want to buy the R9 280X but GTX 770 is so gooood :'(

If you put an 8350 in that board you'll cook it. What retailer are you buying from?

Not likely with 4+1 vrm and no cooling. It doesn't support the 8350 anyway.

The best 970 board for FX is an ASUS M5A97-EVO. None of the ones listed on that site are very good tbh, is there another site we can look at?

Even buying 2nd hand would be better if it meant you could afford a proper motherboard. does the CPU have to be an 8350? What about a cheaper 8 core FX?

From where i come from, it is extremely difficult to get an advanced gaming mobo that too second hand and i already own a FX 8350.Currently i am using Gigabyte LMT S2PT and on the system page it shows that it is running at 2.81 GHz.
You know why is it so ?
I game at 720p currently with a 560Ti and 4Gb Vengeance ram which is of course bottlenecked because my mobo doesn't support higher frequency.

DO NOT GET THE 970-DS3. LISTEN TO ME, DO NOT GET IT.

CPU support is telling me it only supports the 8370E and 8320!

You know what happens when you put a 8350 into that? Exactly what I experienced for about a month.

    Throttling
Complete system freezes unless you underclock to 4 cores.
Potential damaging to your mobo. (Asrock official told me this when I emailed him.)

DO NOT GET IT. For gods sake I was in that situation for too long and its just ****ty.

If you don't believe me check my previous thread "Complete system freezes when watching streams/gaming"

Will ASUS M5A97 R2.0 suffice for even overclocking ?

Maximum of 6K for mobo because i also need to buy ram.

    Probably not.

Why would u need to buy ram if you already have 8GB DDR3? That money can be spent on the motherboard instead.

How much were you budgeting for RAM + motherboard?

Then what do i need to buy for the overclocking thing :/
I just want to play FullHD games at maxed out settings or a little less.If that requirement is met without overclocking then i am fine. The mobo you mentioned also has some overclocking protection of 3 years.

I actually have 4 gigs of ram.I sold off another stick to a friend who was desperate to have one and was quite short on cash.Initially i thought of having both mobo and a 4 gig of ram for under 8K but that won't be happening

I don't know why you are determined to overclock. Not that it is bad, but an FX-8350 will be fine with most games even at stock speeds. The bottleneck will be your graphics card, probably. A bottleneck is something that slows everything down and when you have one, you should only worry about fixing the bottleneck.

It is GOOD to improve your CPU with overclocking. But if your graphics card is at its maximum, you will not gain much by doing so because your graphics card can go no faster. Because your budget is so tight, spend your money where you will get the best results.

By the way, I have an FX-8350. I have the Sabretooth 990FX motherboard. This is a good board for the FX-8350 and can overclock. It is not the cheapest, but not the most expensive. Tell us what you plan to buy before you spend the money - you don't want to make a mistake.

So what do you propose h4rm0ny ?
    The ASUS M5A97 R2.0 won't be enough ?
GTX 770 or 280X would get bottlenecked ?

A GPU is not a bottleneck, anything in the chain before the GPU that slows things down is a bottleneck - like RAM, HDD, or CPU.....

I would get the M5A97-EVO if you can find one, it has 6+2 phase vrm. Otherwise just pm me if you want for other suggestions.
