Hey guys my E8500 is plenty fast but my ATI 6870 can't keep up with certain games. I was thinking of upgrading to the GTX 680. Am I making a mistake by pairing it with a E8500 C2D?

p.s. I'm running the 6870 with a 500W PSU. The desktop has 2 SATA 2.0 HDD's, 2 DVD drives and that's it. So do I need to upgrade the PSU if I go with the 680? :stewpid:

Replace E8500 with a modern i5 Ivy Bridge

My e8400 at 4ghz bottlenecks a stock 480. I would do a new CPU, memory, and MB before upgrading to a 680

Agreed, your CPU isnt plenty fast for todays games.
The gfx card doesnt need that much CPU power, the games do.
You can easily max a gfx card in a benchmark, whereas in many games, there isnt enough power.

Your CPU is going to choke a 680 pretty bad. You'd see improvements even on a 6870 with a modern CPU.

that cpu is in no way plenty fast. it's already holding back your hd 6870. upgrade cpu, you'll see a better performance improvement.

Well it's a unanimous, i'll upgrade the CPU to a i7 3770K. What mobo and memory do you all suggest? :)

Yeah do that then you'll be advised to get 7950 at a later date, you'll also be advised to get the cheapest asrock mobo you can find and the cheapest 1600mhz ram you can find too.
I'd go gigabyte mobo and 2133mhz ram tbh, but sure whatever.

I would recommend Asus motherboards from personal experience. also, get an i5 if it's a gaming rig and you don't plan doing much heavily threaded stuff. if you have the budget, get an i7, of course. you could also wait for haswell, if you can wait. nothing wrong with 7950, asrock motherboards btw OP.

I'd suggest a ASUS as well something like a P8Z77-V and pick up some low voltage 1866 or if its not too much more get 2133. You don't need to over spend on either. SLI there is nothing wrong with the 7950 it's a very powerful card you've been getting quite confrontational lately bro chill a bit man.

My budget is fine. I was planning on buying an SLI 680 Alienware Aurora w/ALX Chassis.

I have an aluminum Lian-Li case. So keep the suggestions coming and if you don't mind links to the products. :stewpid:

    * 1) CPU - i7-3770K

    2) Motherboard ( insert )

    3) Memory ( insert )

    * 4) I'm leaning on Nvidia this time because of their drivers and I prefer their CP.

Do not buy prebuilt and Alienware is owned by Dell now I would stay away putting the rig together yourself is cheaper and a lot more fun.

If you can find a used 2500k for cheap grab it. They oc super easy and do aswell in games as the new ones.

For mob i would just suggest the cheapest asus card and any 8-16gb ddr3 1600+ you can find cheap. (just select a webshop and sort by price )
And maybe you should consider upgrade your power supply if you use the one in the signature. A good brand 650++ would be my suggestion (corsair never fails in my eyes and bigger one if you go sli).

Where do you live? i can link some norwegian links if you want :p

    Wow, thanks m8

I'm in the US and I checked the prices on Amazon. For the money between the i7 3770k and 2500k i'd rather spend the extra $100 so I don't have to deal with that for 3-4 years.

As far as mobo go I like the MSI/ASUS/Intel mobos. I had a Gigabyte LGA 775 mobo that pretty much everything quit over a 4 year span.
