Default Borderlands 1 and 2 PC client build - 07-05-2012, 14:17 | posts: 40 | Location: South Africa

Ive got to put together a PC for a client who's a die hard BL fan. His current PC is on its last legs and he wants a upgrade so he can play Borderlands 1 and 2 with out problems on max settings. Checking out Borderlands requirements and also at the same time looking up BL2 requirements where i can, since they haven't officially been released so its abit hazy. This is the best i could come up with so he can run the games max at 1920x1080 but at the same time not destroy his wallet. Any tips and help will be appreciated. All ill be replacing is the internal components and screen.

I am sure that setup will run Borderlands 1 and 2 without much hassle besides the client doesn't have a lot of money to spend. Also whats wrong with the power supply? It should be more than enough for the 640gt. Corsair PSU's are the only proper ones available to me atm, well i can get others but they are really cheapo brands which probably wouldn't even last half a year

You'd be far off better building an AMD FM1 , A6-3670K or A8-3870K.

CPU I5-3450 would be a fine choice on a budget.

Mobo maybe look at a B75 chipset.
My logic is your using an IvyBridge cpu you may as well get a current chipset to work with it.

Ram maybe have a look at 1600Mhz ram, the IvyBridge cpu supports 1600Mhz memory, why not utilize it.

That GT640 is a joke surely.
2GB of memory on a card does not make it a good card.
Borderland 1 I know for a fact it barely uses 400MB of video memory when running everything max at 1920x1080 res.
I'd imagine that the GT 640 will be like a slide show while gaming, plenty of memory but a but a strangled gpu and memory bandwidth.
Even a GTX550ti is roughly 33% faster then GT 640, but at the cost of almost double the power consumption, both are around the same price as each other.

I do agree that PSU is a little weak if you possibly wanted use a better graphics card.

You need at least a 500W PSU. The GT640 won't be able to run that game at max at 1920x1080. You need something equivalent of the Radeon HD 7750 or GT645.

If not I would recommend something like the AMD A8-3870K and pair it with a Radeon HD 6670. By doing this, you can CrossFire the 3870K's graphics engine and the Radeon HD 6670 for added performance for a cheaper price than the Core i5 option.

Ive asked the client and hes willing to spend a little more on the build taking your suggestions into consideration and availability of those parts and this looks like the keeper.

Looking good.
If you can get one of these for the same price then I'd say go for it instead.
MSI N560GTX-M2D1GD5
My reason for this is, Nvidia drivers really are better and seem to have less issues with games and general OS use.
I have a pair of the twin fan model and they work well.
I had the choice of a HD 6850 or a GTX 560, they were the same price as each other at the time.
There isn't a game that I've had problems with yet, the msi card I linked to is great bang for buck if you can get it for the same price as the HD 6850.

The reason i put down the 6850 is mainly because its on promotion at the supplier and quite abit cheaper. But so far the client is happy with the overall build thanks again to all that helped.
