Hi guys,

So happy I found this site because I have a weird and annoying problem that I would love to solve. I have a HTPC hooked up to a 3D capable Yamaha receiver via hdmi and that is connected to my 50" 3D samsung plasma.

Every non-3D video I play works flawlessly and puts out DTS or DD sound to my receiver. Its only when I play 3D blurays that I encounter a problem. My sound cuts completely out, no sound in the movie or in windows. Only rebooting will get sound to come out of the receiver again. Thats the annoying part, the weird part is that it all used to work fine. Im not really sure if it was a video card driver update or what that did me in. (on current Nvidia drivers atm) Also, Im not really to sure when this happend either since I havent tried to play any 3D blurays in a long time.

One thing I thought it might be is the fact my vid card is DVI, which I use a HDMI adapter for. Maybe nvidia borked the drivers and now my card isnt HDCP or some junk.

I've also tried the 2 main 3D players, Powerdvd 12 and Totalmedia Theater 5, both do the same thing.

Havent been able to find much on this problem so Im wondering if anyone here has any ideas.

there's no audio output from DVI period. What you're saying doesn't make sense.

I remember thinking it wasent possible too, but I kept seeing "HDMI out" in my sound settings. So i looked into it and it seems some video cards were able to output hdmi through their dvi port.

"many devices can output HDMI over a DVI output (examples: ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series video cards),[7] and some multimedia displays accept HDMI (including audio) over a DVI input." -DVI wiki

Starting to think thats my problem because it seems to be a really obscure and rare way to hook sound up. Just wish I knew why it used to work though.

ATI cards used to have a DVI output on the card that sent Audio signals thru it and you had to use that special DVI to HDMI adapter that came with the card. And only one of it DVI plug would output audio.

If you having issue try your other DVI plug on the card with the included DVI to HDMI adapter. If I recalled, there's two that came with the card, and the one that was meant for theaudio output part of the card was a totally different color then the normal adapter. Also make sure you have the audio drivers installed, But I know what you mean as I have one of those older Radeon cards in my closet which used a DVI out with a DVI to HDMI adapter that sent audio out of its dvi plug.

But if you can't fix your issue then you can find a cheap HDAV1.3 Slim on ebay and use that for your blu ray audio HDMI uses. or if your planning on upgrading your video card, you can just move to one which uses doesn't use the old dvi +DVI-HDMi adapter way.

Do you have the 2 pin SPDIF connected?

The SPDIF passthrough is located right next to the PCIE power connectors.
On the GTX280 and 260 there is usually a little plastic or rubber cover you have to remove.

Unfortunately I get no sound at all when I use the other DVI port.

I checked the 2 pin SPDIF connections and everything looked good.

I think im gonna take your advice GenClaymore and upgrade the vid card. Its time for a bit more power anyways.

nVidia's 400 series and up all include an onboard audio chip, so you don't need the SPDIF cable.
