a non issue now since all the new Nvidia cards are 4 GB,which I figured they would be. I see a 970 in my future. Put the 770 in my HTPC..

The 970 and 980 are. But what about the 960 when its released?

8gb is the new 4gb, 6gb is what the 3gb should have been, and 2gb is the new 1gb.

That's true, there is a very small percentage if any that need 8 GB. You don't think Nvidia couldn't put 16 gb and jack a card up right now to make it spank a new 980? Of course they can. Why would they do that? They do it in increments just like Crapple so they have something to sell in 6 months or next year. I'm sure Asus could throw 8 gb on a 900 series card right now. Its all about milking the customer.

I do understand why they do it. If they came out with a card that was as fast as they could make it and put 16 gb on it.. It would be like 5k or more. That would force AMD to fold..lol

Nice to nvidia releasing cards that are strong enough to utilize that much vram. Now there are 4 total. 980/970 290 290x.

All tech companies do this. It's how they make money. Offer as many different versions as possible to appeal to the most people. Look at how many processors Intel releases every year. Would there really be that big of a performance difference between a 2.6ghz processor and a 2.8ghz one?

The most GPU usage I have ever seen in a game is bioshock infinite at about 2300mb and crysis 3 at about 1800.

All other games for me, even with 4ssaa are about 1500. People keep talking about watchdogs and dead rising 3 but it is quite obvious they are bad ports.

I think if I was playing a game so memory intensive it was using 4gb vram it would be running at 20 frames anyway so at that point a 2gband 4gb card would both be unplayable so it wouldn't matter much.

i can see us in 5 - 10 years time arguing over 8gb vs 16gb cards, or better yet even next year over 4gb vs 8gb cards. (prolly as soon as December this year it'll start lol

Oh please, if you buy a card with more memory you've been had in 98% of the cases. You buy them for a false sense of being futureproof for the rare cases that crappy games will sometimes produce bad performance

    Basically this.

The higher memory model video cards are really only relevant in multi GPU situations. It's extremely rare for any single GPU card/system to have too much horsepower and not enough memory.

People that are discarding lack of vram as BS clearly hasnt run sli with cards that has modest amounts of vram (as most nvidia cards has).

I was vram choked with 680 2gb sli, and as am i already with 780 ti sli in some games. Issue is that you have enough gpu power to push very high IQ, but not enough vram to contain it.
