I have been lately having a same problem across several games.
I load the game, and play it for a while, then I get a random freeze, and looped zzzzz granulated sound. GTA IV, Need For Speed, Wolfenstein... They worked fine. The system worked fine until one day Windows 8.1 didn't want to boot up. After putting the install DVD and doing "repair", the computer worked. I have lost all the installed apps though.

After I re-installed some of the games and apps, I came across the following issues:

When computer freezes while playing a game, Sometimes I can reset, sometimes I need a hard reboot. Sometimes the game gets extremely choppy and then it freezes.

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, I get the bios screen, and the computer becomes idle, doesn't want to boot up windows, just sits on bios screen. I solve this problem by jiggling the power supply plug on the hard drive (this is not 100% confirmed that it is the problem)

Windows 8.1 is legit, clean and up to date. Video driver should be up to date as well.

Is there some kind of troubleshoot procedure I should start with?

What free softwares I could use to test? RAM, HD, PSU, what else?

Does the driver need to be installed for the motherboard in windows 8.1

When I go to device manager, everything looks good, no question marks.

I have never over-clocked. Virus scaned with AVG- all clean.

I hope this is not serious. I just want to be able to play a few games and use my music apps as usual. Also, Didn't get the chance to test out the computer resources when I use my music apps to the fullest of resources.

Might be an idea to run memtest86 while you're at it too, this is one to leave running overnight / few hours though

Does it get stuck in the BIOS or during post? If it hangs during post it could be the drive.

Are there any disk controller errors in Event Viewer?

Sounds to me like your video card is getting hot, check to see if the fan is spinning up during game play. I would blow out video card and CPU while your at it.

I have tested the HDD with sentinel.
It seems fine. did the quick test.

Forgot to mention, when I was installing the video Radeon auto detect driver, it was unable to auto detect the video cards...but after few tries, it worked.

Off to the cleaning of fans inside the case before I start more tests.
    Thank you guys! you rule.

I have blown out the cpu and gpu fans.

The teperature shows 40 - 68 degrees celsius for gpu

When I started the game to test it, it worked fine.

I forgot what app I used to measure gpu temp, but I could shurely use a better one. AMD catalyst software is not giving me the option. And also, it crashes when I start it sometimes...
