So, I have a friend, who's rich as hell, money is no problem... and she's on the move alot, but wanted a gaming laptop. Well pokin around I found that dells alienware division has a beast of a laptop, with it's M17x with DUAL GTX280M's!!!

Now, the 280 is simply badass, we all know that. In SLI, even more so! However.. What would the two of them come to in terms of power against a desktop card??

I think I heard someone say it came to the level of a 9800, but im not sure if that was for one 280m, or SLI 280m's.

    Anyone know for sure?

    Wasn't the 9800GTX+ a dual gpu card?

    Yah, I can second that.

And promtly 2x 280m will be equal to 9800GTX in sli, but on a slower laptop cpu.

Well, the CPU in this laptop will be a 2.8ghz dual core. Think that would be good enough to bring out the SLI potential of those 280m's?

It is the... Alienware M17x from dell. Comes out to about 3,098 with a dual core 2.8ghz cpu, 280mx2, 4 gigs ddr2 1066mhz ram, 17 inch 1440x900 res screen (don't want higher with laptop gpu's)

    *edit*

forgot, the 3 year warrenty too.

and just to make sure, a 9800gtx+ is on par with a gtx260 at higher res's?

To the frank, no I don't think it will. You have to remember you are playing on lower resolutions, and you will be cpu bound alot sooner then you will on higher res.

The GPUs will work as fast as they can, and then to work faster they need the cpu to also work faster, and when you introduce SLI the cpu is becoming tied down with "dubble" driver instructions wich obviously eat cycles.

I don't think it will suck, deffo not but it is not balanced, 1x 280m + 2.8 ghz = balance

    2x 280m + i7 940 = balance

If your friend wants a laptop with multipurpose and not only gaming she would chose an i7 as for cpu, since it is just so much more powerful in windows compared to a c2d. Depending on what game the i7 will outperform the c2d alot, and generally speaking i7 will outperform the c2d clock by clock. Only exception is where the c2d is clocked ALOT higher then the i7, wich on a desctop is possible.

Games like crysis and farcry take little to no advantage over i7 compared to c2d when it comes to one gfx card, to be frank most games work like this meaning they are not opted for multiple threads. But the moment you introduce multiple gpus the driver complexity raises and the cpu gets tied down with multiple instructions and tasking, making the i7 pull ahead quite abit on all resolutions.

Well, there's the option to give it a 2,2 or 2.4 ghz quad core. would that be a better choice for the sli setup?

Well, as I said c2 is weaker clock by clock then i7 is.

So what you have is a situation with a lower clocked cpu but with more cores and who takes advatage of multi threaded programs and runs them faster then a dual core would.

It is a compromise, but you said she was rich, so why does it matter? I would go for the i7 on the laptop.

    1) it is better
    2) higher resell value in say 2 years time when everyone has i7 and i5
    3) it is better, and will be a more balanced setup, I mean why skimp on the cpu when you thining about SLI 280M anyway and a laptop for 3 grands? I mean why ??

I7 SLI 280m on a micro x58 board is the way to go if you have alot of money.

That's the most powerfull one they have avalible for this laptop. No I7's.

Agreed. Just google it, latop 280M i7, and then look for etailers that does international shipping...

If I had 3 grand to blow on a laptop I'm sure I could muster 1 grand more and get something real nice..

    280M sli
i7 940 3.0 ghz, prolly clockable to 3.4 without getting too much of temp a increase.
    6gb ddr3 1333-1600 ( doesn't really matter at all if it is 1333 or 1600 )
64 gb ssd disc ( will reduce weight alot on the laptop )
Then an external hdd for all crap, there are modern external discs that look decent and are very pleasing to the eye.
    bluray disc
    bluetooth hubs
    ir hubs

Think we are looking at 4 grand now.

Btw, I hope you are aware that you can't play on batterys on these powerful laptops, I would guess 2-3hour of battery time on this one playing a game :)

    Try google for the keycomponents.

If that gives nothing then look for a specialized store that sell gaming laptops.

Or one that does customizeable ones.

Hmm... It seems that most who will use the I7 don't do 280m's in sli. Wonder why dell's the only ones that do that.

Have a look at this site here

Customizeable gaming laptops took 3 mins to find this, and im sure if u look around you will find more.

Ill put something together for around 4000-4500 grands and u and others can comment, then u can look around for the best price/warrantys etc on other sites.

    /edit

seems the chosen items don't save on cookie, so I will e-mail the specs to myself and then put it on here.

But it lande don 3.3 grand and then add a 2nd 280m and you got sli, and it says it is useraupgradeable aswell and I'm sure if you email and ask them they can put that in aswell. Also comes with a 3 years full cover warranty, theft accident etc.

    /edit

Well email ain't comming ill just write it in before Ill step off.

    CPU: 940

Gfx: 280M, e-mail them to ask them to add another in the build.

RAM: 6 gb 1066 ( kinda suspected most laptops dont come with high end memory )

Bluray player who reads all other formats aswell and burn

HDD: 80 gb SSD, will reduce weight and noise of the laptop alot, use an external for all the mfing mp3 files n crap you don't use everyday. Can ofc add a 2nd HDD but it will either cost more ( 2x ssds) or make more noise/weigh more.

Soundcard: default - not like you need 5.1 sound or 7.1 sound on a laptop lol.. use headphones.

Batterys: I would recommend extra 12 cell batterys since this laptop will have a very short battery time due to the highend stuff.

    OS: DL win7 RC
Office: Lawl...dl if u need it badly
Warranty: depending where you from, I'm assuming US you have to research the terms yourself to see wich one fits you. I would take 3 years warranty that covers anything, and then I would look in my homeassurance to see if that covers theft.

With the 2nd 280M it should be around 4 grand, 4.150ish, incl full warranty for 400 bux~.

Well thats what I would pick for a good gaming/movie/mediaplatform laptop. The full 1920x1200 screen is the way to go imo, 1400x1200 = yawn.

I'd say the lappie would last 2 years aswell and prolly resellf or 1.5 grands then.
