GTX 980 Club - Overclocking - Benchmarks!

You won't need to do anything with the drivers, just replace the card and it should be good to go.

 

Looking forward to seeing some crazy OCs on these babies. I'll be sticking with my old fashioned Keplers but these fancy new cards do look nice.

 

@ Xenotone - If I had waited three months and bought a GTX 780 Ti for the same price I paid for my GTX 780 then I would definitely not have bought a GTX 980. This new card is a bit faster in some benchmarks but in a few I've seen it is marginally slower. The GTX 980 really isn't a worthwhile upgrade for anyone with a GTX 780 Ti unless you want the extra 1 GB of VRAM.

Trying to run some benchmarks now on my old card...seems I'm having to revalidate a few of my older games as they're not loading (GRID 2 for example). Anyone else ever have to do this? Steam usually fails a few failed files and redownload thems then the game is OK. However, TW: Rome II will load but I cannot run the benchmark as when I try to disable v-sync I get a black screen and the game shows as not responding. Not sure why it is doing that, the game itself works fine.

Reinstall the driver, even though the driver was previously installed when you put a new card in sometimes you have to reinstall the driver i have found from my experience.

Dont forget to reboot after re-installing! Make sure Physx is installed also

I don't really see the point in a dedicated GPU as a physx card these days. Is it worth the extra heat and power use, when a 980 itself is most likely going to handle everything with no problem, including any physx calculations? I was thinking about using my 680 as a dedicated physx card, but don't really see it being worth it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I spent most of the afternoon running about a dozen or so benchmarks and I'd forgotten how boring that is, especially when you've seen most of them countless times before. Anyway, I've fitted my GTX 980 now, although I'm a bit miffed that I managed to snap off the little plastic tab thingie at the end of the top PCI-e slot. The graphics card stays firmly inserted in the slot so I'm hoping that its absence isn't going to make it harder to remove the GTX 980 when I inevitably upgrade...

I left the drivers installed and Windows automatically detected the card and reinstalled them. I then rebooted and everything seems to be working fine...so far. I've only ran one benchmark on my GTX 980 so far but the results are pleasing (all my benchmarks are at 1920x1200 with all settings maxed except where stated):

Thief (DX11, SSAO High)

GTX 780 - Min: 34.3, Ave: 50.2, Max: 69.0 fps
GTX 980 - Min: 47.2, Ave: 73.0, Max. 104.0 fps

Those are all of stocks clocks (though the GTX 980 is an SC model clocked at 1,241 Mhz) and my CPU is running at its stock 3.5 GHz speed too (it can boost to 3.9 GHz). That's a 37.6% increase in the minimum framerate, a 45.4% increase in the average framerate (pushing it over my ideal 60 fps) and a 50.7% increase in the max framerate. Obviously not every game is going to show that level of improvement but that's a very nice start!

GTX 780 - Min: 48.0, Max: 94.0, Ave: 67.6 fps
GTX 980 - Min: 62.0, Max: 98.0, Ave: 79.1 fps

Batman: Arkham City (DX11, FXAA High, PhysX High, Extreme Detail)

GTX 780 - Min: 24, Max: 125, Ave: 73 fps
GTX 980 - Min: 41, Max: 121, Ave: 81 fps

Batman: Arkham Origins (DX11, FXAA High, PhysX High, DX11 Enhancements)

GTX 780 - Min: 24, Max: 101, Ave: 68 fps
GTX 980 - Min: 23, Max: 129, Ave: 92 fps

Batman: Arkham Origins (DX11, TXAA High, PhysX High, DX11 Enhancements)

GTX 780 - Min: 25, Max: 80, Ave: 55 fps
GTX 980 - Min: 43, Max: 101, Ave: 73 fps

With that last game, the GTX 980 basically allows me to use TXAA High and play at the same framerate (actually a little higher) as my GTX 780 ran using FXAA High!

Total War: Rome II (In-game Benchmark, DX11, V-sync On***, Veg, Alpha On, DOF High, etc, etc.)

GTX 780 - Ave: 38.1 fps
GTX 980 - Ave: 55.7 fps

*** I was unable to disable v-sync (I kept getting a black screen and the game stops responding though it works fine otherwise) so these results are obviously capped at 60 fps. The average for the GTX 980 results would have been much higher as I noticed the benchmark was regularly hitting 60 fps. In general with v-sync off the GTX 780 previously rarely hit 60 fps. This is quite a big performance increase. The game reports that the GTX 980 has 3,072 MB of VRAM though but I did have the Unlimited Memory option checked.

 

Sleeping Dogs (DX11, Extreme AA, Quality Motion Blur)

GTX 980 - Ave: 70.7, Max: 100.4, Min: 43.4 fps

Unfortunately, I forgot to benchmark this on my GTX 780 but I know that it did not hold 60 fps very well on these settings. From memory, these results are not far off the ones I got when I had GTX 680 SLI!!!

 

Thanks Darren for benchmarks. Impressive performance for stocks clocks, at 1400-1500 MHz that card must be another 10 fps faster .

BTW sleeping dogs is using SSAA on max settings, so your card is pushing 70fps at 4K in this game

 

What clockspeeds are you running on the gpu and cpu? This is what I get in Tombraider on ultra.

780ti @ 1250 - Min: 68.0, Max: 124.0, Ave: 93.1 fps

 

It's SSAA, I don't know it's 4xSSAA. Could just be 2x.

 

I am using Custom Quality with EVERYTHING maxed except for AA which is set to FXAA. Ultra Quality sets Shadows to Normal (mine are on Ultra *EDIT* I previously incorrectly said they were on High) and Hair is set to Normal not TressFX. The next quality setting up, Ultimate, enables TressFX but to get High Shadows you need to set them manually (the settings will then show as Custom).

My CPU is not overclocked and so is running at a stock 3.5 GHz with turbo boosts to 3.9 GHz. My GTX 980 is clocked at 1,241 MHz on the core (boosts to 1,342-1,354 MHz during games) and 7,010 MHz on the memory.

Some more benchmarks:

F1 2013 (DX11, 8xMSAA)

GTX 780 - Ave: 107, Min: 86 fps (Frames Rendered 14,059)
GTX 980 - Ave: 103, Min: 81 fps (Frames Rendered 13,615) ???

Yes, a game that actually runs slightly slower on the GTX 980 than the 780!!! :3eyes:

GRID 2 - Chicago Loop (DX11, 8xMSAA)

GTX 780 - Ave: 98.41, Min: 76.93, Max: 123.81 fps
GTX 980 - Ave: 119.31, Min: 90.24, Max: 155.70 fps

GRID Autosports - San Francisco GP Circuit (DX11, 8xMSAA)

GTX 780 - Ave: 88.27, Min: 66.81, Max: 106.91 fps
GTX 980 - Ave: 102.93, Min: 78.88, Max: 129.87 fps

Hitman Absolution (DX11, 4xMSAA + FXAA)

GTX 780 - Ave: 59.49, Min: 50.00, Max: 96.00 fps
GTX 980 - Ave: 63.89, Min: 52.00, Max: 82.00 fps ???

Another game that has a lower max. framerate and only a small increase in the average figure. CPU limited maybe?

I'm using the v344.11 for both my GTX 780 and 980 results by the way. All tests are on STOCK clocks...I've not attempted any overclocking yet as I wanted to see how the card performed out of the box first.

 

EDIT: just redid this one after restarting the game. My results are closer to yours now.

Yes I did all that too, everything turned up to maximum manually. Something doesn't seem quite right when you compare the batman figures too.

 

They usually post the latest delivery time. Sometimes you'll be getting it much earlier than 8pm. Congrats on your purchase! I got my Shipping Notification from TigerDirect this morning, it's on Track for Tuesday delivery :banana:

 

Those are the results I get on my PC and the Batman ones were all ran twice, disregarding the first one as PhysX seems to causes hitches (the min. framerate always seem to drop during the screen blackouts between the different sections of the benchmark).

Besides, your CPU is clocked 1.2 GHz higher so it will obviously have give you higher framerates in more CPU limited games.

 

I don't think that's the reason tbh, I know Tombraider is very much GPU bound. I think there's something up with your system. You don't have vsync enabled or anything like that?
