Right now I have a phenom x6 overclocked to 3.8ghz and a nvidia 960 and the newer games such as doom beta and gears of war ultimate are starting to show my cpus age.

I am looking at upgrading to Intel since amd has done nothing in the last few years concerning cpus and everybody says intel is way faster then even amds 8350

I was looking at the i5-4690k or i5-3570k but I want to make sure it's "future" proof. I will be playing at just 1080p I don't plan on going 4k or anything.

Would those be fine with a 960 and another gpu if I decide to upgrade later?

Any other suggestions would be great.

I'd take the 4690K simply because the platform will be a bit more upgradeable. Z68/Z77 stuff is mostly second hand stuff, something you don't want for several years of use.
Get something with warranty, Z97 stuff is becoming cheaper by the day :D

If you're going to upgrade why not a 6600 k

My guess would be DDR4 but there are no penalties when using DDR3 on socket 1151. Not a lot of high end boards using DDR3 though.

Yea I don't have the money to buy new ram also. I'm fine sticking with ddr3. But like I said any suggestions are great because I have no idea what I'm doing. Never had an intel chip before.

Should I bother looking at i7 or is i5 fine???

I'd personally go with the i5 for gaming and snatch an i7 a couple of years later when they become cheaper (as in second hand). Buying an i7 really doesn't add anything except when you use it for more than gaming, things like compiling, virtualization, folding etc. It'll save you money allowing you to buy a better mobo which is always better since it's the base of the entire system.

1080p vs 1440p vs 2160p gameplay is not really depending on cpu anyway.
    its vram and gpu power.

whats your budget for a new cpu?

    i5 6700k goes for 380 bucks/340 eur
    i5 6600k goes for 250 bucks/220 eur

without free multiplicator you pay 60$/50€ less for those two

About $250 for a cpu but hopefully lower. I will also need a mobo. $380 is way out of my price range for a cpu. I don't want anything beastly just mid range and will support future gpu upgrades.

Z170+6600k and some fast ddr4 ram. It would be night and day upgrade.

Extra 100$ for i7 is better spent on ssd.

If I were you Id wait for Zen to launch, Your Phenom is pretty much just as fast as any current Fx series if not better/Faster.

I came from a Fx 6300 @ 4ghz to a i7 4790k Devils canyon @ 4.6 ghz I mean for sure you will notice a diffrence, Gaming is much smoother overall, apps seem to run faster and better, Network speed has improved, and it is very quiet with the H-80 I, I can barely hear the thing during gaming.

I know how the upgrade bug is so addicting, You dont wanna wait any longer we have all been there lol. I say go for a 4790k or wait for zen, Or what about Skylake?

I 2nd that. I've got a i5 6600k with a gtx 970. I don't think for gaming you are going to get much more out of an i7 and cost at least for Skylake is to high. i5 is a much better deal and for me I'm pushing at least 60fps min on Ultra setting (1080p) on AAA title games. Plus if you buy a K series chip you can overclock it and get a lot more out of it.
