We review the reference AMD Radeon R9-290, the product priced at 399 USD / 349 EUR is going to shock and awe in terms of price, features and performance. We'll test the card with FCAT Frametimes, Ult...

Wow, 780 needs another price drop if this card is available for 350€.

So the 290 is more or less even with the 780 in performance but for $125 less.

I dont see any point in the 290x after this.

This is what i'm thinking most will think as well. Same goes for the 780 honestly. Though i want to see some OCing results on better coolers. I have to see something that will be able to compete with a 780 around 1200 on the core or better. Because apparently classy's and HOF's are pretty much guaranteed to hit that or above. From what most tell me 1300+ on air is very common.

Nice review! Slightly underwhelming OC potential though....hopefully this will improve over the next few months with mature chips...who knows.

Btw Hilbert can you list the IC's used please, some of these AIB's are still offloading Elpida's leftovers.....it would help to know which cards have them...

What's wrong with Elipda? I figured with Micron taking over, they'd start putting out some quality stuff.

Thank you very much for great review!

At this price I see this card as a potential upgrade for myself.
Now just waiting for custom coolers.

    This card is the killer.

Yeah but Micron acquired a mountain of fabricated Elpida IC's with the takeover which have found their way onto some of the 280x cards. And Micron chips don't have "Elpida" stamped on the :D

There's nothing really wrong with Elpida, they just don't overclock as high as Hynix or Samsung. Especially Hynix.

Great review Hilbert, as always! Wow, 290 is the obvious choice. It's equal or better than the 780 and Titan. With a price tag of $399 and battlefield deluxe. AMD is beating Nvidia up.. And with the potential for more performance as mantle mature. Well done AMD, well done. *hands clapping*

290x ~ Water point is there. BTW is it possible to use this new temperature target with older generations?
But yes, once OCed on default cooling it's same story as 7970 vs 7950: Heat vs performance is nearly same for nearly same chips.

Incredible price/performance! Just checked ocuk and you can get a sapphire for £320! That £80-£100 cheaper than a 780!

Btw Hilbert, love the thermal imaging!

Just love how is faster then GTX 780,maybe nVidia should consider another price drop or they will stay with chips on stock, also the CFX 290 is faster then 780 SLI,GJ AMD,really GJ!Now keep working harder on u CFX drivers and u have a very competitive product!

AMD clearly supports shift towards 4k / 3 screens / Virtual reality. Because such industries need mainstream users to have sufficient power to even consider possibility to obtain such device.

We have not gained much performance in GPU department since launch of HD7970. But now it is here and cheap enough.
    Code:
    3870>4870>5870>6970>7970>R9-290x
    320 > 800 >1600>1536>2048>2816 Shaders
    MADD > >Vliw5 >Vliw4 >GCN1.0>GCN1.1

Hey Hilbert, would you mind doing a benchmark run with this card for BF4. Since it would be very interesting how it will deal with it! :) Thanks in advance!
