Default Are there any legit 24bit/96-192khz music files that aren't simply upsampled? - 06-28-2012, 14:53 | posts: 4,044

I went searching for some high res music files and everyone seemed not to realise the futility of upsampling music from the cd's wav files...

Are there any alt music/heavy music/electronic music websites where you can get masters at 24bit/96khz.

The only cd's that seem to be legit are classical music.

Higher bitrate audio is still coming of age as far as media is concerned and it will be awhile before we can find high resolution audio for all our favorite bands.

I own some Blu-ray audio disks (Rush-Moving Pictures and Tom Petty Damn the torpedoes) which i have ripped to my pc for easy playback in foobar. These are both 24/96 5.1. I have a few (now collectors items) DVD audio discs that I ripped as well. These dvd audio discs are over 10 years old (Hotel California and Rumors from Fleetwood Mac) and are also 24/96 5.1. The dvd audio discs have the tracks in stereo at 24/192. I do not think anyone is capable of telling the difference between 96khz and 192khz. Maybe with an oscilloscope. I am pretty sure most if not all blu ray audio is 24/96 or higher.

There are a few places online that sell 24/96 files and you can find some optical media usually concerts or special editions. You have to look around though as those types of files are far from the standard for media playback.
Although many people wish it was...

Its not just down to the person, its down to the system you are hearing it on and what you are playing, not all 192K audio files are worth having over lower bitrate versions.
I can tell the difference between decent 192 and 96K without a problem.
Its not huge and you will have to be into audio big time for it to really matter.

192K is like an extra breath of fresh air on top of 96K, it changes the tone of some sounds very slightly too.
Some very quiet/fast/complex detail becomes clearer.
But unless your system can resolve the extra detail you arent going to notice.

Using my Auzentech Preludes DAC, there is very little point in 192K.
But with my Minimax Plus DAC, its a pleasant extra.

Muff, I just got my player, the one I discussed with you and it's brilliant I have it hooked up via coax and analog and can switch between both It's the ONKYO DV-SP504 Super audio and DVD audio player. If anyone is interested, I can post up a website that specializes in 24bit 96khz multi channel DVD Audio and SACD.

Ok, this is a great website I found and all you do is join, pay through paypal and open a ticket and the admin will talk to you and then all you do, is download via ftp, then once you have the iso, burn it to a DVD It works out to around 5 dollars USD an album. I thought it was a pretty sweet deal

Do you you think that is the result of the DAC's in the units, the media or a combination of both? I actually just plugged in a new DAC today, Don't ask which it is as I won't tell you until my review is done - anyway, I am very impressed with just 16 bit audio, so I am considering getting some 24/96 audio to test out on this new baby.

Cool, can't wait for the review, and yeah it's a combo of it all I think, because in my player, the DAC is very high quality. I think it's a cirrus logic real high end one, not sure.

There are some, the reason there aren't all is because most don't have a high def version that has been made...

it is far from a common media type for newer artists that concentrate on CD and download sales.

Porcupine Tree has quite a few 24/96 stereo and surround releases, some older stuff in 24/48. I believe they only have them as DVD-A, but you can play DVD-A in foobar with a free plugin.

Releasing audio at those sample rates is rather pointless, but they still sound a lot better than the CD versions simply because they are mixed for the audiophile crowd.

:Edit: I almost forgot, Anathema has two high resolution releases, one of which can be downloaded, the other is in DVD-A. https://www.burningshed.com/store/24/product/436/3813/

Many new movies are mixed in higher resolutions also 24/96, 24/192Khz. I guess them being pointless could be a debate much like everything else in the audio world.
