Hi, I'm about to get Dell E1505 laptop (1.66 Core Solo, 1Gb DDR2 533, 5400RPM HD, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 256Mb). I have to travel sometimes, and i'm desperate to get home and play a while  (NFSMW and FarCry are my precious ones) because my actual travel Laptop Dell PII supports only Minesweeper  . So I hope to play even when I'm travelling with the new one. And with this setup I'm still within 1k USD...
I have read some information regarding this GPU, but didn't see any benchmark scores. Do you have any real numbers from Aquamark or 3dMark? Or links?... Please...

I just recently purchased a dell E1505 with a 2GHz Core Duo, 1GB of RAM, 60GB 7200RPM HDD, and the ATI X1400. I really love it right now (actually I'm typing this post on it). The X1400 performs very well for a midrange mobility card. I can play Oblivion at Medium to low settings with 25+ FPS almost anywhere. I can play Quake 4 with medium settings at 1024X768 with only the very rare slowdown. Far Cry should run at least as well as Quake 4. I ran 3D mark 05 and got a score of just over 1800 with plenty of programs running in the background (I hate McAfee!!!). With some overclocking and tweaking some people have broken 2000 points. It is truly a fast machine and I whole-heartedly recommend it.

However, with the Core Solo I can't be sure any of my experiences apply to you. I know you can definitely expect lower performance overall.

I suggest you check out the website that greatly helped me pick my laptop. www.notebookreview.com it is a good resource for prospective notebook buyers.

Also, I'm just curious, but have you tried using one of dell online coupons? You could potentially get a $1500 notebook for about $1000, or a $2000 notebook for about $1300 (thats what I did). That would allow you to buy a Core Duo rather than a Core Solo or any number of smaller upgrades.

    Good luck buying a notebook.

On Futuremark's ORB 3Dmark06 scores range from 767-834. For 05', E1505 stock clock scores are around 1770.

How much are you spending? For $1059.99 you can get the Acer Aspire AS5672WLMi which features the far superior MR X1600, an Intel Core Duo T2300 processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM, and a 120GB HD.

I requested an upgrade for my current laptop. So I can spend only = or less than 1k. My boss is paying :approval:

Yes I'm using there 30% off Coupon...

And I liked that Acer. It will not be easy to convince my boss to spend $176 (for aspire+tax+shipping). :uhoh:

Anyway I think Dell will be all right

    Thank you guys.

make sure to watch things like battery life when you upgrade. core solo to duo shouldnt make much of a difference at all, but i think x1400 to x1600 would.

assuming a 6-cell battery that acer would only get 2.5-3 hours of battery life. and if you're gaming/watching a dvd, no more than 2. though the x1600 IS a huge leap in performance. a 9 cell would give it 3-4ish when word processing/internetting. (yes, that is now a word :p)

The MR X1600 in the Aspire is downclocked considerably from the factory specs, however you can always use ATI Tool to clock it back up during gaming.

I believe you'd have to contact Acer and inquire about replacement parts.

Hrm seems they have a new 5672 with the X1600. Originally they had X1400's.

I have a Dell E1505 and it is a great laptop. I play mostly NFS:MW and it plays great but I usually run with car reflection off. That game also does not natively support widescreen so I downloaded this little program that will hack it to run at the monitor's native res.

It orginally came with a 1.66 but I already upgraded to a 2.0ghz and DDR2-667. Didn't see a whole lot of improvement though.

    scores: 3dmark (as shipped) 01: 10127 03: 3668 05: 1744 06:929

for the new Acer with the X1600 my friend got it and the card simply overheated itself and he cannot start the lappy now because of it. So he send it back for replacement.. I guess the laptop really is heating with that X1600

I have an E1505 and I really like it. It is AMAZINGLY fast compared to my old Turion 64 computer and the battery life is great about about 6 hours of internet/basic use and 3-4 hours of DVD (I do have the 9 cell upgrade).

These are my 3D scores on the X1400 256MB HyperMemory card it came with:
    3Dmark01: 9846
    3Dmark06: 1138

I think these are very good scores and will keep me happy for a while (atleast until FSx comes out lol)

    PS: My specs are Core Duo 1.83GHZ T2400, 100GB 5400rpm sata, DVDrw, X1400 256MB graphix, 1GB DDR2 533 system memory.

    You'll be happy!

Hah I just got my Dell Inspiron 6400 (E1505 in US)

    My specs are:

    Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
    Seagate 120GB 5400 rpm
    ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 256MB
    Infineon 2x512MB DDR2 553Mhz
    DVD+/- RW
    9-Cell Battery
    Sigmatel 9300 HD Audio

It's a great laptop, replaces my desktop actually and it pretty much beats my old desktop!
