ok im trying to install and run the SMP client, ive never done this before so kids gloves please. Im using Vista SP1 32bit FAH6.23beta-win32-SMP-mpich ive followed the tuorial, Create folder call it F@H on the c drive install the client to that destination, all good so far, i then right click the exe file and select run as Admin it opens and asks for a user name: i then minimise that and go back to the F@H folder and double click install.bat The console windows opens and says: OpenSCManager Failed: Access is denied. (error 5) Unable to remove the previous installation, install failed. account <Domain> Vista-pc\Andy: Thanks for your help
So what do i need to do, whould i uninstall it all and run it ther right way round ? It does say to run the client first though. Installation: Log into the account that will be folding. Now make a folder in C: call it FAH for example (C:\FAH). Download the latest SMP Client (Or gpu if your using gpu). Double click and install to the directory we've just created (C:\FAH) Now go to the directory C:\FAH and right click on "fah.exe" and make sure its being ran under admin. Now double click on install.bat and follow that, password and username, then it should say: If you see this twice, MPI is working If you see this twice, MPI is working if it does, then your almost there! Now, reboot and login back to the folding account, and naviagte to your FAH directory in C:\ and double click fah.exe and enter the details and et-voila!
ok ive reinstalled it and its ok, Thanks Morbias ok is there any info for setting it up to auto run at windows start and use more resourses when idle that kind of thing, basically so i can turn it on and forget about it but can still use the pc for everyday stuff and gaming.
You can leave it running with out slow downs, unless it chews up all your RAM.. But for general use it's fine IMO. For it to fold on startup I guess you could play around with your own startup, or just use a shortcut on your desktop.
ok thanks, ill make a shortcut and just start it up myself, but what i would like is can you set it in the advanced settings to use more cpu power when the pc is idle? so that when i leave it going over night it can step up a gear?
Im pretty sure there is a variable for this, it will be under the advanced bit with you use the '-configonly' flag on the shortcut. You can set it's usage up from idle to 'low' (If I can recall correctly, with any luck ). I wouldn't worry about this if you have nothing else running anyway (or small minor programs).
ok, ive been using SMP beta client for a couple of days, how do i get it running on all 4 cores, at the moment its utilising 25% of my 4 cores. ive uninstalled it all so i can set it up correctly Also also i noticed theres 2 clients for SMP which better to be using with Vista 32Bit?
It uses all the cores by default, unless its not setup correctly? Make sure (IF your using the latest version) your using '-smp' flag on the shortcut you use. Or just use the older SMP client, which just works.
When you run the SMP client you have to make a shortcut to the folding executable, and add the '-smp' flag to its start up location. Make sure you do a fresh install, and download the correct client! OR use the older client.
