It says the Thunderbolt is stereo, it cant do 5.1, but...

I found the specs of your amp here.
http://www.gadgetsguru.com/sony-ht-d...ndia-9034.aspx

Your amp only has analogue stereo inputs so you cannot do 5.1 with analogue.
You can use HDMI or SPDIF (coax or optical) for 5.1 though.

This means it wont use a soundcards DAC, the soundcard is the DAC in the amplifier.
The DAC in your amp wont be as good quality as the DAC in the Thunderbolt card unfortunately, so it probably wont sound as nice.

The amp hasnt got 5.1 analogue in, only stereo.
Theres no point changing sound card unless you need a specific feature, the analogue stage cant be used for 5.1 with your amp.

You have to use digital: HDMI or SPDIF with your amp.

I have that receiver, and from a whole weekend trying to get surround sound from my computer and from my Bluray to work I found a few things:
The only input that support surround is the SPDIF (coaxial and optical).
The HDMI it's only to switch from your dvd, bluray, etc to the TV. The receiver won't take the audio from the HDMI input.

If your sound card supports encoding the sound in Dolby Digital Live or DTS Interactive, you can send 5.1 audio through the digital out to the receiver, if you can choose, I think that DTS interactive sounds a little better.
I know that some onboard soundcards support this, and some discrete ones too.
The Xonar DS supports DTS interactive, and I think many other Xonars too, but I don't know which ones.
