I remember seeing Rogue Squadron being played on a PC (probably celeron CPU) with a banshee video card and was amazed at the graphics. I have bought a PC (PII 350mhz GeForce Video card)and played a demo version of Rogue Squadron (direct x)- It didn't look (or play) as half as good as on the PC with the banshee card?!? Is this something to do with glide? Am I mistaken?

Well ,Glide surely is a very good API.
Its the API that started it all.I play Messiah with Glide. But i think that it is really up to the game programmer that will implement each API correctly.Direct3D is also a good API and is growing with a steady pace.Maybe the game programmer for Rogue Squadron did a better job with Glide than with D3D.
Glidefan knows his stuff- Bigtime! I have found that if a title gives you the choice to run in glide, it will probably look the best. But more and more, titles are being written in D3D, and as Glidefan says ,it depends on how well the programmer does w/ the D3d. Also OpenGL rocks. I wonder why it isn't used for racing or flightsims? It seems that OpenGL is used more for shooters.Whats up w/ that?

    Thanks for the good words.
I don't really know why OpenGL is used like that ,but i suppose that it may have some libraries or effects that are best used in that kind of games.

If there is an option for glide, then it will always be the better option for those with 3dfx cards. The reason is simple...with Direct3D, there are so many lines of code needed to ensure compatibility with the hundreds of different video cards out there that it slows things down by taking the time to process everything. Glide, on the otherhand, is specific to 3dfx hardware, and doesn't need to waste time with compatibility

Microsoft makes DirectX and the other companies make the drivers. So it is up to the card makers to make their card compatible with DirectX.Yes it is eassier to programme Glide because u only have a limited number of chipsets but it is the drivers that make a card more or less compatible.
