Default 7970 crossfired with a 7770 - 05-26-2012, 18:56 | posts: 2

heya,
ive got 2 5750's in crossfire atm, but i have just done an overhall of my computer, now i need to decide on a new video card,
one of my friends said to get a 7970 and a 7770 and crossfire them, but i havent been able to find anything on the net to see if it is worth it at all.
is it just a waste of time and money, or would adding the 7770 to the 7970 make it any better,
cheers

Doesn't work. It has to be the same chip. You can crossfire a 7970 with a 7950 or a 7770 with a 7750.

heya,
that is what i always thought,
but then again, i thought i had read somewhere, that you can do 2 differnet ati chipsets, and the slower chip just helps out where it can, but i dont remember where or when i read it.
lol, ok its not do-able,
ok in australia the 7970 is about $600, should i go for that, or does anyone know something better for the money, also it must be gigabyte

That has never been the case. When Crossfiring 2 different cards, you're stuck with the performance level of the slowest card. So, crossfiring an HD7970 with an HD7950 provides no more performance than Crossfire using 2, HD7950's.

That's not true, that's how SLI works. Crossfired cards can have 2 cards working at different clockspeeds.

The rule of thumb is that the first two digits of the card's model need to be the same for crossfire, and the faster card will downclock to the lowest common denominator.
